If you are looking for information on the link between thyroid problems and depression, then you should read this article. You will learn about how thyroid problems affect depression, what types of depression are common in people who have this problem and the type of treatments that are used to treat the thyroid and depression. After reading this article you should have a good understanding of the effects these two conditions have on each other.

Research suggests that some forms of depression are more common in people who suffer from thyroid problems. One form of depression that frequently affects people with this problem is bipolar disorder, also known as manic depressive disorder. This form of depression is characterized by manic or hypomanic episodes which cause the individual to suffer from a variety of symptoms which include: Periods of hyperactivity, euphoria, and excitement followed by periods of fatigue, sleeping problems as well as appetite problems. These are just a few of several symptoms that may be experienced. A sufferer may display a few specific symptoms for anything from a few days to a few weeks before a different set of symptoms come into play.

If you or someone that you know seems to be suffering from the symptoms mentioned above, medical should be sought as soon as possible. A physician will be able to carry out some tests which will give him a proper diagnosis of the type of depression that has developed. He available or she will also be able to advise you on the various types of medication available that are used to treat bipolar depression and the mood swings that accompany it.

One of the most effective forms of treatment for this particular type of depression is lithium. However this form of medication must be taken with extra care if it is being used by someone who has bipolar depression. This is because lithium can alter the functioning of the thyroid which is a problem, because this causes the levels of thyroid hormone to drop which can cause various symptoms to appear. Lithium causes this drop in thyroid hormone because it blocks the manufacture of the thyroid hormone.

As a result doctors measure the level of thyroid hormone in a patient who has been prescribed lithium after 2-4 weeks of using the medication. If you suffer from problems with your thyroid and depression the doctor must be informed so he can keep track of the levels of thyroid hormone in your body.

Anti depressants can also lower the levels of thyroid hormones in the body, so the doctor will check the levels of thyroid hormone in his patients’ body after a month or so of using the medication. Some of the most common types of antidepressants that can lower thyroid hormone levels include Paxil, Prozac, Lexapro and Zoloft to name but a few.

Now that you have read this article you should have a basic understanding of the link between thyroid and depression drugs.

Do the holidays make you feel sad? Do you ever feel depressed for no reason? For a lot of people, depression is a very real, upsetting, time consuming thing that sucks up a lot of our energy. When people talk about weight gain, usually you hear about it in terms of: a death in the family, going away to college, having children, not making the sports team in high school, being injured as a result of being on a sports team, breaking up with a boyfriend or girlfriend, getting divorced or any other thing along those lines.

For many people weight gain is due to depression, feelings of guilt or sadness. It can also be due to living a sedentary lifestyle. For example, when my grandfather died, my grandmother became a recluse, staying in her house the majority of the time. She was depressed and resorted to eating as a way to fill the void. She would make her favorite dishes that she would cook for her husband when he was alive. It was easy for her to eat since the refrigerator was right there. There are actual medical facts which show that carbohydrates in foods stimulate serotonin production. As you may recall, serotonin is that chemical that your brain releases which regulates things such as anger, aggression, body temperature, mood, sleep sexuality and apetite.

The best way to battle depression is to be honest with yourself and try to understand your emotions and what you are feeling. Sometimes, people who are depressed don’t even realize that they are depressed. And if they do realize that they have a problem, sometimes they need to seek the advice and help of a professional such as a psychologist, philosopher, psychiatrist or some other medical doctor. If you can, keep a diary to record how you are feeling as well as how you were feeling just prior to eating something as well as how you felt afterwards. This information may be invaluable as well as insightful into telling you how or what it is that is triggering you to eat. Before you open up the refrigerator, ask yourself, “Am I really hungry? Why am I here again?”

The next time you feel the urge to eat something; try to distract yourself by getting some exercise. If you know that eating poorly or overeating is a problem for you, try to make sure that you are out of your apartment of house as often as possible, this way it will be easier for you to resist the temptation. If you do feel the urge to eat something, try to pick something healthier. If you happen to spend a lot of time at home (i.e. you work from home or you are a stay-at-home mom), the next time you go food shopping, only purchase healthy items to stock your house with, this way you won’t have a choice except to eat healthier. Join a gym or an exercise group. If you are married or in a relationship or have a close friend, confide in them and see if you can work together to get over your depression.

The truth is cardio training and aerobic exercise can become very monotonous and boring when you do it on a very regular basis. However, there are a number of things you can do to make your cardio workouts less monotonous, more exciting, and as a result, get much more out of them. If you follow the tips below, you will have more fun with your cardio training and get more out of your workouts.

The first thing you can do is to break the monotonous cycle of your cardio training is to switch the type of exercise you do regularly. Most people have their favorite machine or form of exercise that they like to do which is fine. However switching up the machine you use or the type of aerobic exercise you engage in will break the cycle of doing the same thing over and over. It will force you to likely use slightly different muscles and be nice a change from what you are accustomed to. An additional benefit is that you will eliminate any plateau/adaptation effect that comes from doing the same exercise over and over.

You see the more and more you do a particular cardio routine on the same piece of equipment (or form of exercise), your body will naturally adapt to it. This can cause a plateau effect and result in you not getting as much benefit from the exercise when you first started. Switching up machines takes care of this and won’t allow your body to adapt to your routine, subsequently giving you more out of your workout.

Another great tip when it comes to getting more out of your cardio workout is to set goals for your workout and work to outdo your previous effort. If you get into the habit of doing the same routine over and over, it is very easy to go through the motions and not push yourself as much as you could.

However, if you set goals and track your performance, you can try to outdo yourself, and better your results. Say for example in one cardio session you burned 500 calories in a half hour. Next session set a goal to burn 525 or 550 calories. This will force you to work a little harder and allow you to get more from your workouts.

You will be amazed if you set goals and measure your progress regularly, just how much you can improve your performance, increase the amount of calories you burn, and increase the distance you travel. Make a game out of it and challenge yourself to reach your goals and try to continually outperform yourself. This will add an element of challenge and fun to your workouts and allow you to get much more out of them.

Take these tips and put them to use. If you do, you’ll be on your way to getting more out of your cardio workouts. The more you get out of your cardio workouts, the quicker you will reach your goals.

There is no question that moderate aerobic exercise has a role to play in fat loss. But as you progress into your program, cardio workouts can become a bit stale and time-consuming. Heck, I know some regular exercisers who probably wouldn’t do cardio if they couldn’t watch “American Idol” while on the treadmill. Now that’s fine, but if you want ongoing change you need to keep finding new ways to challenge your body. A great way to do that is to use Interval Training in your fitness routine.

Interval training involves alternating periods of high intensity work with periods of lower intensity “active recovery” (e.g. alternating running with walking). This has several advantages. First, the short duration “burst” during the high intensity phase stimulates muscle in a way which moderate, steady-pace cardio does not. And, if you remember, last month we learned that the key to being able to burn more calories and fat around the clock, 24 hours a day, is to increase muscle. Now if you’re thinking, “yeah, but didn’t he also say that high intensity cardio burns muscle tissue?” then you’re correct. The key is short duration, explosive spurts. Think of the physique of an elite sprinter vs. that of the marathon runner, and you’ll start to get the picture.

Aside from being muscle-producing, interval training also burns more total calories. In fact, there is evidence to suggest that this effect continues up to 24 hours after an intense interval training workout. This is most likely because your body expends more calories in recovering and repairing than it would for a less intense workout. Thus, it is possible for you to get a very effective cardio session in a lot less time. Great for those of us with hectic schedules!

Training with intervals is dynamic and challenging, which makes it a great deal more interesting than regular cardio. You can alternate a minute of skipping rope with pedaling a stationary bike, weighted step-ups with walking on the treadmill, even jogging up and down the stairs of your house or building, alternated with periods of walking circles around your dining-room table! There are so many possible variations.

Alright, so know that you know why it works, you’re probably wondering, “how can I start incorporating interval training into my workouts?” Well, I usually like to start clients off by doing intervals on a stationary or recumbent bike, because it’s simpler and there is less chance of injury. At first, each interval should be a bit longer, and the “active recovery” phase should be longer than the “sprint,” say 3 minutes compared to 2 minutes of high intensity. Try to use a perceived 80% effort for those two minutes, by the end of which your legs should be burning and you should have the feeling that you couldn’t keep going for very long. Do this by increasing the resistance and the speed of pedaling. Then, to get the most out your intervals, it’s important that you slow right down to a comfortable 30% output for the recovery phase. Repeat this process 3-6 times initially, but don’t forget to warm-up 5-10 minutes first, and cool down for about 5 minutes afterwards. The overall duration of your session should be between 15 and 35 minutes.

As you become more advanced, try to challenge yourself with shorter, more intense intervals, and equal periods of recovery. Try 4-10 intervals of 45 seconds at 90% effort, alternated with 45 seconds at 30%, and vary the type of cardio as well. As with anything type exercise, you will get maximum results if you start gradually and push yourself more and more as your strength and stamina improves.

Also, the best time for you to interval train is probably immediately after your resistance training workout, but because it is relatively brief, you may find it quite suitable to perform this workout as your AM cardio, as long as you properly warm up first.

So here it is in a nutshell. To make best use of interval training:

1. Warm up for 5-10 minutes
2. Alternate periods of 80% to 90% effort with periods of 30% effort, depending on your level
3. Cool down for 5 minutes after
4. Start with longer periods and progress to shorter ones
5. As your strength and endurance improves, challenge yourself with different combinations, and more intense “bursts,” while simultaneously reducing rest periods

In recent years, a lot has been said for the effectiveness of interval training, and some even tout it as the fat loss solution. But that is misleading, and while I do believe interval training has it’s place in your fitness program, it’s just one piece of the puzzle. A puzzle which, I hope, is beginning to make more sense to you with each successive issue of this newsletter! Together with cardiovascular exercise, the right nutrition and resistance training are the three synergistic elements that will allow to achieve all your fat loss and fitness goals. Good luck!

I believe that it is part of my job as a fitness expert to bring the science to you. Much of what is currently out there is based in nothing but tradition and acceptance. I know that this weeks newsletter will come as a great surprise to the majority of you and you can do what you would like with the information that I am going to present in this edition. All I ask is that you at least give it some thought.

This may come as a shock to you, but to sculpt a lean, muscular, athletic and toned body, aerobic exercise is one of the worst ways to achieve this desired look. Aerobics means “with oxygen” and in terms of exercise, much of what is seen in the gym on the “cardio” equipment is aerobic. The reason I am quoting cardio is because cardio is not the same thing as aerobics, yet the two are used interchangeably everyday. All aerobic exercise is cardiovascular in nature, but not all cardiovascular exercise is aerobic. Cardio simply means any mode of exercise that stresses the cardiovascular system, so weight training is cardio too. Some other forms of aerobic athletics would include bicycling and marathons. Before I get into the science of this topic, just realize that aerobics did not become hugely popular until the late 70’s/early 80’s and the studies that were coming out regarding the benefits of aerobic exercise were funded and put out to the public by the companies that were making “cardio” equipment to put in all the gyms going up around the country. Think about the timing of everything, gyms did not start to become popular until this time when fitness was brought to the main stream by none other than one of my heroes, Arnold Schwarzenegger. Hmm, so all of the sudden, when gyms started exploding in this country, aerobics became great for us and studies just “happened” to coincide with this time period? I have no problem with aerobics if the person truly enjoys it. It can be a very stimulating experience. My problem is with the misapplication of aerobics to sculpt the lean physique that so may of us are after.

For those of you that have seen Pumping Iron, notice that Arnold was in the best shape of his career, yet he performs no aerobics, just intense weight training and dieting. When Arnold made his comeback to the bodybuilding stage in 1980, he too had bought into the aerobics revolution and the physique he brought to the stage was the smallest, softest and out of shape of his entire career. Aerobics train the nervous system and musculature system to become slow, it stresses our type I muscle fibers (slow twitch and red ones, remember this for later on). These are not the fibers that we want to stress if our goal were to gain some muscle and lose body fat, those fibers would be the type II fibers (fast twitch and white). So already, you can see that if you are performing intense resistance training and performing hours a week of aerobics, you are stressing two different systems, not a good thing. Lets examine the chicken and the duck. Now, you know that dark meat has a lot more fat than white meat. The chicken is predominantly white meat and the duck is predominantly dark meat. What makes the meat dark is myoglobin, which carries oxygen molecules to the muscle for work. The duck can fly for thousands of miles and the chicken cannot even get off the ground for more than a few seconds, yet the chicken is much more muscular and lean. Ducks are aerobic and they store fat for use very effectively. Aerobics trains the body to become very efficient at using fat and storing fat, because the predominant fuel source in aerobic exercise is fat. Did you ever hear of the “fat burning zone”? Throw it out the window; it is quite possibly one of the most misleading pieces of fitness information ever! If your car is more efficient at using fuel, is it going to use more or less of it? The correct answer is less of it, great for your wallet, but not your body if we are talking about efficiency of fat use for exercise. We want the hummer engine, the big gas-guzzler, the most fuel inefficient car we can find to burn body fat. To equate this to exercise, we want high intensity exercise with rest interspersed. We want a very large oxygen deficit. In a study by Tremblay et al, it was demonstrated that high-intensity exercise, specifically intermittent, supramaximal exercise, is the most optimal for fat loss. There were two groups, the long slow distance aerobic endurance group (LSD) that was on their program for 20 weeks and the high intensity interval training (HIIT) group that was on a program for 15 weeks. The amount of energy utilized (calories) by the LSD group was DOUBLE that of the HIIT group: however, six skin fold measurements demonstrated greater loss in the HIIT group than the LSD group. When this was expressed on a per energy basis, the HIIT group’s reduction in skin folds was 9X greater than the LSD group! That is what you call more bang for your buck (Willey, 2007). The HIIT group created large post-exercise oxygen consumptions (EPOC), which can take up to 48 hours to your body to fully recover from. This is where fat loss occurs. Not during the hours spent on the treadmill. In another published study by R. Bahr, performed at the department of physiology at the National Institute of Occupational Health in Oslo, Norway, it was demonstrated that low-intensity (defined as 65% of maximum heart rate for less than 1 hour) led to a total EPOC of only 5 calories. On the other hand, intensive exercise-where heart rate was above 85% of maximum, led to EPOC values up to 180 calories (Staley, 2005). As I have said in the past, the body is incredibly adaptive. What used to take 30 minutes on the cardio equipment to burn 300 calories, will soon take 40 minutes, then 45, then 50 etc. What you are doing is creating the body to be a fat storing super efficient fat burning machine! Think about it, do all those people at the gym that slave on those machines ever seem to change? Maybe when they first start, but it has been shown that with this type of exercise, the body becomes almost completely adapted after the first eight weeks. Go to any 5K, marathon or bike race and 60-70% of the people that cross the finish line are fat.

If the body is more efficient at burning and storing fat, this will also equate to a lowered metabolism, again, not a good thing. We are looking for exercise that takes the body hours to recover from (large EPOC). You will not even be aware of this recovery, but if you were put in a lab, oxygen debt would still be elevated for a few hours to 48 hours! Did you ever notice that even after running a few miles, you could hold a conversation during it or immediately following it? The human body recovers very quickly from aerobic exercise. This is not optimal for fat loss. For those of you aerobic athletes, there was another study done by Tabata in Japan that showed anaerobic interval training actually caused greater increases in AEROBIC capacity, more so than the group that actually performed aerobic running! That is just a piece of information to use when you want to switch up your training and do some shorter duration type of stuff.

Which is leaner and more muscular, the marathon runner or sprinter?

Sprinters such as Ben Johnson of Olympic infamy were known to go to McDonalds and see how many Big Macs they could eat, often downing 5-6 without a problem and staying shredded. These athletes have created those big gas-guzzling machines I was talking about earlier. Look at gymnasts; they never do aerobics, yet it can be argued that they have the best physiques of any group of athletes out there. Their training consists of explosive high intensity bouts of exercise, often with nothing more than their body weight.

In a different capacity, aerobic athletes, most notably marathon runners, are the most injured group of athletes in the world. Every time the foot strikes the ground, 3-5X the body weight is applied in force up through the skeletal system, OUCH! The stress hormone cortisol is also produced in very large amounts when the body is constantly performing aerobics. Despite what you see on those silly commercials, cortisol is essential to the human body, but high amounts will cause the accumulation of body fat, most visibly around the mid-section. High cortisol will also negatively impact your adrenal glands over time. Distance runners who train upward of 100 miles per week do not expend more than 800 to 1300 “extra” calories each day above their normal energy requirements (McArdle, 2001). Does that sound it was like their time of investment?

How do you make sure your exercise is intense enough? If you can hold a conversation once a set or interval is completed, you are more than ready to go again. Remember, you are trying to create a deficit. What about the really heavy person that lost massive amounts of weight from their aerobics program? They would have lost weight doing any form of activity that took them out of their sedentary state. The composition of weight lost also needs to be looked at. If you are just performing cardio, your precious muscle is being used as a fuel source, thus it is completely common for people to lose tons of weight, yet be a fatter, smaller version of their former self. This will happen because the composition of weight lost will come from muscle and fat, not predominantly fat. Some of you might say, but Kyle, “I have seen you doing cardio and you told me to do it in the past.” That is correct, but I also used to have a tail and bangs for my haircut, times changes, so does knowledge.

To wrap this up, you might be wondering why I seem so passionate about this topic. Well, I am getting ready for another bodybuilding show and in years past, I too would spend hours on cardio equipment trying to get “ripped”. Needless to say, I didn’t like my return on investment and the muscle that was becoming smaller do to being trained in a slow manner. What would often happen to me from such extreme dieting and hours upon hours of aerobics is that I would gain 30-35 pounds the next week when the competition was over because I had succeeded in creating the perfect “Fat Storing Machine”. I went through every book I could get my hands on to find a better way. What I found was simple, through diet and high intensity resistance exercise with incomplete recovery (beginning the next set before oxygen is fully restored) has led to my best and biggest shape ever! I perform sprints a couple of days per week, but that usually only takes about 10 minutes. Now here is the interesting part, my back has been acting up going into spasm. On those days, you can still find me on the stair-master. Why? Because emotionally and mentally I felt that I needed it. I just said the key words; gym goers have become emotionally dependent on their “cardio” equipment, feeling that if they miss a session, they will get fat. Again, think about the results you have been getting and really think if they are worth it. Most aerobic training is dependent upon an emotional attachment to it.

I know that many of you will be resistant to this idea and this concept may not even catch on in my lifetime. But I did enjoy making you aware of this information!

If you like to run and jog and ride bikes, great go for it, I am all for it. As I said before, I am. Activity is awesome, any kind. Just realize what benefits you are trying to get from it. I have been studying and trying systems of resistance training that allow me to get as “shredded” as I need to, without stepping foot on any more cardio equipment. I hope that this issue was enlightening to you or at least interesting. I would like to thank Scott Abel, a fantastic strength coach from Canada that has helped to change my view of how I approach fitness and exercise for the better.

Many people suffer with the skin condition known as acne or Zits; but there are now many treatments available which can help the condition so it is more bearable. It is one of those areas where research has continued to make advancements; the result of this effort is new, more effective, treatments are becoming available. Although there may seem like a huge range of acne skin care products, they can be broken down into three broad categories:

* Preventative: Creams, lotions etc. to help cleanse and tone the skin

* Those available at a drugstore or over-the-counter

* Prescription: Dermatologist or Doctor, specialist cream or ointment

Those that fall into the preventative category are based around general skin conditioning to help stop acne from forming; for example, special toners and skin cleansers. In the real sense, these products are just those that should be part of your daily routine; there use is not just confined to individuals who are suffer with the complaint. Other acne skin care products, like skin cleansers for instance, are more specific about their job; they ensure the facial pores (and other areas) remain free of oil. These types of products are reducing the chance of oil staying in the pores and aiding the growth of harmful bacteria which assists the formation of the skin condition.

Other skin care treatments can help exfoliate the skin; there is now a variety of this type of product available over the counter. Dead skin cells and other atmospheric pollutants are removed cleaning the pores which reduce the chance of any bacterial growth. There are specialized acne skin care products available over-the-counter, they do not require the need of a prescription. A bacterium that aids the formation of acne is stopped by creams and cleansers that contain benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid; these include products which extract the unwanted oil from the skin.

It is often a good idea to start with a product that has lower concentration of benzoyl peroxide (e.g. 5 percent) to see how the skin responds; if a reaction occurs, a cleaner or cream containing alpha hydroxy acid should be safe. It might just be a case of trial and error to find an acne skin care product that works; if finding something that works is proving difficult, your dermatologist should be able to help. If you do need to see your doctor or skin care specialist then he may give you a prescription for antibiotics or special ointments.

Under certain circumstances, having the infected material removed from the pores under a local anesthetic may be suggested by your dermatologist; although this is a minor procedure, if it were performed by the person themselves it could result in skin damage. Your doctor may even suggest a course of hormone therapy as a skin care treatment; hormone changes are known to be one cause of acne. Positive research means that a sufferer does not have to put up with this condition anymore.

Cleaning and feeding nutrition to the skin and being able to remove dead skin effectively, allows acne sufferers to develop a healthier complexion. Diet change is also a very effective way of banishing acne alongside an overall healthy lifestyle.

One area that does not very often get addressed when dealing with the causes of acne is the physiological level. Often these physical eruptions are the boy’s way of expressing unexpressed emotions - such as anger, frustration and a general lack of self confidence.

When these are taken into account and deal with positively, many have found that the facial condition subsides markedly.

One of the greatest gifts that anyone who is suffering from acne can give themselves is to recognize this side of it and address it positively with out blaming themselves or anyone else.

So with natural skin care and positive action to deal with one’s emotional make-up, banishment is nigh.

Bacne, or back acne, is much like other types of acne. It is characterized by blemishes on the skin ranging from mild cases with pimples and blackheads, to the more severe cases, with pustules and even acne cysts. Back acne does not discriminate against any one age group, sex, race, or geographic location. It can literally strike anyone.

Many times when someone does get back acne, they are overwhelmed with the desire to cure it immediately. They feel like the discoloration or imperfections are all people will notice when people look at them. Below you will find the ten best ways to get rid of acne on your back.

1. If you want your back acne to clear up fast, a very important way to achieve this is to wear cool light colored clothes and to apply a little powder to your back. Doing so will reduce perspiration, the breeding ground for the bacteria that caused the acne. Also when you do perspire a lot, make sure to change your shirt so you do not get extra buildup.

2. When you do extended exercise or prolonged activities which require a lot of exertion where you perspire a lot, take a shower or bathe immediately. For the times when a shower or bath is not possible, at the least take a soft, clean, dry towel and wipe off your sweat.

3. The typical person will rub his skin dry after a shower or bath. If you suffer from back acne, it is important not to do this. Instead, take your towel and pat yourself dry. Rubbing of the skin can further the irritation and cause the skin to get more inflamed.

4. Use an anti-bacterial cleanser for acne. There are also soaps made to combat acne on your whole body, not just your face. Do not, however, use face soap on your back acne. This is too harsh and will not meet the special needs of your sensitive skin.

5. People who suffer from back acne should not use backpacks. Carrying a backpack can add heat to your already sensitive back. The added heat can increase perspiration and cause more breeding areas for your acne.

6. Using a benozyl peroxide mixture is still one of the best methods available to treat acne. However, make sure the gel or cream you choose has at least 10% benzoyl peroxide.

7. It is true that benzyl peroxide does work well, but there have been studies conducted wherein it was found that your acne will clear up to two times faster if you combine benzyl peroxide and a product containing alpha-hydroxyl.

8. There are also natural remedies available to deal with acne. Making and using a soap with sodium hydroxide (lye) and tea tree oil will not dry the acne but it will give you noticeably softer skin.

9. Exfoliating once a week is a good way as long as you pay close attention to do it on all parts of your body affected by the acne including, but not limited to your back and buttocks. This can be an expensive way to cure it but a less expensive option is to use sugar instead of the scrubs and cleansers that are available. Sugar will also remove the dead skin cells.

10. If your acne is severe, you can seek help from a skin doctor (dermatologist) Dermatologists help people with a variety of skin problems. A dermatologist may prescribe medications for your back acne problem. There are oral antibiotics, topical treatments, retinol and even oral contraceptives.

It is advised that you treat your back acne at the first signs of it. This can help to stop further spread of the bacteria and can also minimize the damage to your skin. The sooner you treat it, the sooner it will be gone.

These are the ten most effective methods available to treat and get rid of acne on your back. Remember to be active in fighting the skin condition. The more you know about what causes back acne and what to avoid when you have it, the sooner you can help your body get rid of it.

Asthmas seldom causes allergic reactions in people, but allergies can be a trigger to asthma and allergies caused by air-borne particles sometimes cause a double reaction in certain sufferers. The air in the home and outside is filled with floating particles, many of which are breathed in through the nose and mouth. Some may cause a temporary reaction while others will cause a reaction every time the person is exposed. These allergic reactions can often trigger an asthma attack for an asthmatic person.

There are steps that can be taken to avoid the reactions of certain things on those who suffer from asthma and allergies, among them are simply to stay away from known triggers. However, this is not always possible and learning how to protect the immediate environment from being triggers friendly. While there are medical needs associated with those with asthma and allergies, the need for help can be reduced by taking a few precautions.

Some of the known triggers of asthma and allergies are smoke, cigarette and wood as well as perfumes, paint and hairspray. Others may include allergens such as pollen, dust and pet hair and pet dander. There are many others and new ones are being found every day. Avoiding exposure to these allergens is the best method, but that may entail living in a bubble, which is not feasible.

Control Triggers By Controlling Environment

Triggers for asthma and allergies that are found outside may not always be in the control of the sufferer. However, controlling the environment in which they live is within their power and making sure their home is resistant to hosting their known asthma and allergies triggers, will help them avoid sudden attacks.

Reducing or removing as many triggers of asthma and allergies is the first step in cleaning the home and, if possible, air conditioners and filtering systems can help remove dust from the air. Room temperature of 68 to 72-degrees is recommended and humidity levels of between 40 to 50 percent are ideal. Clothing should never be left on the bedroom floor as dust mites will accumulate quickly and when they are finally moved, the mites will be spread throughout the room.

Vacuum cleaner filters are one of the most important weapons in the fight against dust mites and micro filters that capture particles as small .3 microns are recommended. If a new vacuum is out of the question, filters can be purchased at a hardware store and cut to fit inside the vacuum cleaner to help contain the particles.

Do you think that you are allergic to your pet dog or cat? If so then you may be looking for some help, And I have found that it is hard when you find that you are allergic to your pet.

Before you assume that it is a pet allergy that you have you should know that sometimes, the symptoms of having a pet allergy can be caused by other allergies or by another medical illness, such as the flu or the common cold, Those who suffer from pet allergies may experience a runny nose, sneezing, nasal congestion, postnasal drip, develop a skin rash, or have difficultly breathing. If you experience severe allergy symptoms or if you would like conformation that you do have a pet allergy, schedule a visit with a doctor.

As for how you can go about treating your pet allergies that are due to your pet, you can remove the pet from your home. If you are unable to do so or if you choose not to, you will want to see if you can find it a good home. Friends or family members who are willing to take your pet are often considered the best option. Even if you want to keep your pet with you, there are still a number of steps that you can take to seek relief from some common pet allergies.

The best way to limit your allergy symptoms that can be attributed to your pet is to keep your pet out of your bedroom. The bedroom is the room where we spend most of our time. For that reason, your pet should be kept out of your bedroom. Doing so, may limit the number of irritating symptoms you display. It may also help to get you a good night of sleep. In addition to the bedroom, it is also important to examine other rooms that you may spend a good portion of your time, Consider keeping your pet out of that room as well.

Not letting your pet climb on your furniture is another great tip, This is particularly important if you like to lie down on your couch or rest in a reclining chair. You do not want to have pet dander and hair in your face. If you must, covers can be used, There are a number of cloth style covers that can be used, They are a great alternative to the unattractive plastic covers, With that in mind, should you use cloth covers, be sure to wash them every few days or when too much pet hair accumulates.

Investing in an air purifier is another way that you can seek relief from a pet allergy, without having to find a new home for your beloved pet, Air purifiers work by eliminating air particles, including pet dander, It is best if you search online for air purifiers that are designed to help those with allergies, These air purifiers can easily be found with a standard internet search, HEPA air filters and HEPA air purifiers are known for their amazing results.

Vacuuming as much as possible is another way to manage the symptoms that you may be experiencing due to having a pet allergy, In addition to vacuuming often, be sure to take a good, close look at the vacuum cleaner you are using. There are now vacuum cleaners that use HEPA filters and they come highly rated and recommended, In fact, there are even some vacuum cleaners that are targeted towards and marketed towards pet owners, You should examine these vacuum cleaners.

Following the steps mentioned above will help you get some relief from your pet allergies, you can also contact your doctor for some medications that will help you as well.

Post tubal ligation syndrome (PTLS) is a term used to describe a variety of symptoms that may occur after a tubal ligation. Symptoms that women frequently report include increased menstrual bleeding and cramps, hot flushes, night sweats, irritability, and mood swings. These are thought to be due to changes in hormone levels. One theory about what may cause these symptoms after a tubal ligation has to do with interruption of blood circulation between the ovaries and uterus that affects the production of ovarian hormones.

Doctors differ in their opinions about whether post tubal symptoms constitutes a true syndrome. It has been a subject of controversy n the medical literature for decades. Studies have reported conflicting conclusions about whether these symptoms are more common among women who have had a tubal sterilization than among women who have not had a sterilization procedure.

Women who describe their symptoms are convinced that PTLS is real and they argue that doctors should recognize this as a true medical syndrome. Many of these women have been told by doctors that the symptoms they have developed after their tubal ligation could not be related to the surgery and often report that they feel they aren’t taken seriously. Some doctors recommend treatment with birth control pills, antidepressants, anti-anxiety medications, referral to a psychologist, or even hysterectomy.

During the past several years, increasing numbers of patients have requested tubal lreversal surgery in hopes of finding relief from PTLS symptoms. A recent study of 91 women reporting PTLS used a standardized questionnaire prior to tubal reversal and at 6 month intervals following tubal ligation reversal to gather statistical data regarding the possible effects of tubal reversal on PTLS symptoms. The study found that 90% of reported improvement in their PTLS symptoms, 8% reported no change, and 2% reported an increase in symptoms after tubal ligation reveresal.

Members of the Tubal Reversal Message Board often discuss PTLS and how tubal reversal surgery has helped alleviate symptoms. These women uniformly disagree with the concept that symptoms that they have experienced since their tubal ligation are “just in their heads”. They are certain that their symptoms are not imaginary and are grateful when their symptoms disappear after tubal reversal surgery. The Message Board members offer encouragement and support to women who have similar symptoms and feelings and it helps them to realize that they are not alone. Following are some examples of posts on the subject of PTLS on the message board.

“I want to say thank you… my PTLS is practically gone and gets better ever month. I did not realize how bad I was truly feeling until I felt better and I thank you. I thank you for ‘putting me back together’ and for giving me the opportunity to have another child.”

“My name is Rhonda I had the reversal done because of the Post Tubal Syndrome caused by my tubal ligation. Although I realize that some people think that this Syndrome doesn’t exist, I can tell you that is does. I am so grateful that I found you and your staff. The results I have had since the reversal surgery have been tremendous.”

Conclusion: Counseling before having a tubal ligation rarely includes the possibility of menstrual and other symptoms encompassed by the term “post tubal ligation syndrome”. When women develop problems following female sterilization, they are frequently informed that their symptoms have nothing to do with the tubal ligation procedure. The purpose of this article is to promote awareness of PTLS and the possibility that tubal reparative surgery may remedy the problems.

Menopause is defined as the absence of the woman’s menstrual periods for 12 months. The menopausal transition starts with a varying menstrual cycle length and ends with the final menstrual period and it usually installs in women once they approach or pass age 50.

Menopause has a series of symptoms through which the woman is made aware of the fact that this period is approaching. Because menopause is closely related to all sorts of hormonal activity, its symptoms differ from person to person. You will hardly find two women who will report the exact menopause symptoms.

There are many symptoms of menopause and a woman may witness more or less of them. Among the most frequent menopausal symptoms, one can mention irregular virginal bleeding. Some women have minimal problems with abnormal bleeding during perimenopause whereas others have unpredictable, excessive bleeding.

Before the woman starts her menopause, her periods can come earlier or later, she witnesses changes in the menstrual cycle. All menstrual activity must be closely watched during this period, so all women who develop irregular periods should see a doctor to confirm that the irregular menses are due to perimenopause and not as a sign of another medical illness.

Another symptom most women who are at their menopause describe are hot flashes and night time sweats. These feelings of warmth that spreads over the body that are often most pronounced in the head and chest are associated with the hormonal changes the woman’s body suffers during menopause.

Other symptoms associated with menopause are situated at the vagina’s level. Vaginal symptoms occur as a result of the lining tissues of the vagina becoming thinner, drier, and less elastic because the levels of the estrogen hormone drop.

Women have also described a long list of menopause symptoms. In fact, the list of such symptoms is very long, ranging to around 34 menopause symptoms. Other such problems women describe are emotional and cognitive changes (memory problems, irritability and sudden changes of mood and behavior), physical changes (gains in weight, skin problems - wrinkles, acne, hair growth on the chin, upper lip, chest, or abdomen) or urinary issues.

When women notice any of the 34 menopause symptoms, they should see a doctor at once to tell them exactly their medical condition and to recommend medical care, if required. If these 34 menopause symptoms are left untreated, the woman may develop a series of complications (osteoporosis or cardiovascular diseases, to mention just a few of these more severe problems that can affect women at menopause).

During my life journey of safe weight loss struggles. I have found a few things along the way that have kept me focused and on track, I call them the golden rules of any successful diet plan. Staying to a plan is not easy but with a couple of small, SAFE WEIGHT LOSS rules you can help accelerate your weight loss. These are not just rules to lose weight but rules to live by, a complete lifestyle change. Following these rules will help you to get the weight off quickly and safely and keep the weight off for good. Say goodbye to the old you and say hello to the new hot you!

Ten Golden Rules to help your diet plan:

1. Support of Friends and Family is the most important thing that you can have when starting and continuing any weight loss program. Let the people you care about and that care about you know your weight loss goals. They are more likely to jump on board to help rather than tempt you if they know your weight loss plans. If you have this support you have everything, these are the people that will give you encouragement when you are feeling defeated

2. Breaking your daily food intake into five to six meals instead of three will be beneficial for your weight loss. Doing this will keeps your metabolism high all day long making sure that your body does not feel as though you are starving yourself and store food as fat.

3. Portion size is very important, throw out your scale for weighing food; you have the best tool at your fingertips! Use your fist as a guide, a clenched fist shows you how each portion should be at each of your six meals. A deck of cards also works the same way. This really works trust me.

4. Cold, water based liquids should be consumed with every meal. Ensure you are drinking cold, low calorie drinks; they keep you full, add water to your cells and help you burn calories because your body has to heat the water up to body temperature.

5. Using a calorie shifting method for eating keeps your metabolism on high gear, it helps to make sure that your body never gets used to a routine. It speeds up your fat loss and helps you keep on track by using foods you like in your diet plan.

6. Go for a walk every day. We are not talking about heavy cardio we are talking about a brisk walk to keep your energy levels up and burn calories. Get out from in front of that TV and help stimulate your mind and boost your energy levels at the same time!

7. Throw your scale out six days a week. Do not look at your weight everyday it will only prove to be a de-motivator as your weight fluctuates while your body adjusts to your new routine. Instead weigh yourself once a week at the same time, do not forget to record this in your log! (we will cover this in the next rule)

8. Start a log. Write down what and when you eat as well as the activates you do. This helps build a routine. It takes 12 weeks for any new thing to become habit or routine. This helps you get there faster, helps you stay on track and work towards achieving your goals.

9. Set realistic goals and timeframes for weight loss. Do not be heartbroken if you miss your goals, over time you may plateau for short periods do not worry you can work through this just stay determined. Stay focused you can do it. I BELIEVE IN YOU !!

10. REWARD YOURSELF AT EVERY LITTLE GOAL. FOR EXAMPLE WHEN YOU LOSE TEN POUNDS GO TO THE SPA TREAT YOURSELF YOUR WORTH IT!

Remember that you are the only you that you have. You deserve the best; always strive to make yourself better and healthier!

More than $30 billion each year is spent on diet remedies and aids. Estimates from national surveys show that at any given time twenty five to fifty percent of adults in American are on some sort of diet. Many people are looking to herbs to aid them in their weight loss.

Permanent weight loss, whether you choose herbs or another solution, requires a commitment to a healthier lifestyle in general to be successful. Common causes for obesity today are poor eating habits, lack of exercise as well as poor diet. Other contributing factors are glandular malfunction, hypoglycemis, diabetes, emotional tension, love of food and boredom. Poor nutrition may be an important factor in obesity. Inadequate intake of certain essential nutrients can cause fat to accumulate in the body. Food your body does not use or cannot use or can be a poison to your system can be stored in body tissues. This can cause water retention.

Obesity can be a serious health problem. Americans are fatter and more stressed out than ever. Today Americans are no likelier to get regular exercise than they were ten years ago. Unhealthy choices in their diets also contribute to this problem.

Basically there are three approaches for managing weight through natural nutritional supplementation. Natural appetite suppressants are used to of course, control the appetite. Diuretic nutrients and herbs are used to decrease water retention. Lipotropic vitamins are used for their ability to reduce fat and cholesterol. These herbs and nutrients can aid with weight loss but once again permanent weight loss requires commitment to healthier lifestyle choices.

Herbs that are often recommended for aid in weight loss are yarrow, alfalfa, hydrangea, white ash, corn silk, hyssop, uva ursi, dandelion, juniper berries, gravel root, thyme, oat straw, seawrack, horsetail and parsley. These can be used as a tea for their diuretic properties.

Astragalus is recommended for increased energy and improving nutrient absorption. This herb should not be used if one has a fever. Aloe vera juice can cleanse the digestive tract, and is also recommended for improved digestion.

The next group of herbs is recommended to aid with weight loss because they aid in the metabolism of fat. Mustard seed, butcher’s broom, green tea, cardamom, ginger, cayenne, Garcinia cambogia, and cinnamon that improve digestion and aid in the metabolism of fat. During pregnancy cinnamon should not be used in large quantities.

Guarana, ephedra, kola nut are appetite suppressants. Although it is a natural weight loss herb ephedra should not be used by those who suffer from anxiety, glaucoma, high blood pressure, insomnia, or heart disease. It also should be avoided if you are taking monoamine oxidase (MOA) inhibitor drug for depression.

Siberian ginseng aids in moving nutrients and fluids throughout the body. It also aids to reduce stress of adjusting to changes in new eating habits. This drug however should not be used if you have high blood pressure, heart disorder or hypoglycemia. Fenugreek is useful for breaking up fat in the liver. Fennel is a natural appetite suppressant and also removes fat and mucus from the intestinal track. These herbs help with weight loss in different ways.

This next group is recommended to stimulate the adrenal glands and improve thyroid function. That is how these herbs aid in weight loss. Licorice root, bladderwrack, sarsaparilla, borage seed, and hawthorn berry. Licorice can elevate blood pressure. It should not be used on a daily basis for more than seven days in a row. If you have high blood pressures do not use it.

When it comes to losing weight, weight loss vitamins and herbs can help. At www.healthyvitamininfo.com/ you can find information that will help you lose weight naturally.

It’s time to quit. Let’s face it, smoking is no longer the norm in society. It seems most restaurants and bars have banned smoking in their facilities. If you live in California you can not smoke any where except the privacy of your own home. I know first hand that even the prospect of quitting produces a feeling of panic in most smokers mind. It is probably true that if you are reading this you did not just recently picked up smoking; you have been doing it years or decades. You really don’t see the reasons to quit until they are starring you in the face. Unfortunately for a lot of people, the will to quit doesn’t come in until we are faced with our own mortality.

You hear all of the reasons to quit all the time. Smoking kills plain and simple. Heart Diseases, the risk of Heart attack and numerous Cancer’s to say the least. You think the simple statement that Smoking Kills would be enough to scare most people straight into quitting, but it doesn’t. Smoking isn’t just simply a habit that we pick up one day and put down the next. Smoking is an addiction, and one of the worst around. Within a few weeks of smoking it grabs hold of you and it doesn’t let go. So why it is that thinking of the fact that smoking kills, doesn’t scare us enough to quit? For one, we naturally fell like that just couldn’t happen to me. The fact is it could and eventually will.

Here is my story; I married a non-smoker, so of course he hated it. I promised him numerous times that I would quit, and I did, maybe for a week maybe for a few months, but something would always happen and I would go right back to where I started. I started having breathing problems, nothing to severe, I was just always winded, a flight of stares, playing with my kids in the backyard, I could not do it for long. I got bronchitis and my x-rays were so black the doctor really couldn’t even see my lungs. I couldn’t believe it was that bad, I smoked low tar cigarettes (mistakenly believing that those were better). I went home that day with my bag full of medicine, and looked at my young children and new that they deserved a mother that would be there for a long time to come. That was my motivator, and if you are going to be successful each person that wants to quit needs to find their motivator, with out it, you are sure to fail.

Create a Quit Plan

-Pick a date, and plan for it.

-Make a list of why you want to quit (your motivators)

-Keep a record of where and when you smoke and how you feel.

-On that date throw away all nicotine, ashtrays, lighters and anything that you would associate with smoking.

-Tell friends and family your quit date, so they can motivate you, don’t try and go it alone.

-Stop on the date you picked, if not, you will just keep putting it off.

The initial withdrawal pains will only last a few days, but breaking the habit of smoking will take much longer to conquer. If it takes using stop smoking aids, gum, patches, prescription medication or hypnosis, do it. Whatever it takes quit. You will be amazes on how you feel when you’re done. If you won’t due it for yourself, do it for the one’s who love you!

If you have realized that it is time to quit here is a reliable method for you to try, this is the one that worked for me. Good luck! timetoquit.weebly.com

Trust me now - I used to smoke 25 high tar cigarettes a day so when I tell you that I can help you stop smoking, it comes from the heart. Read more about it in this article.

I’m not going to patronise you and give you yet more reasons to quit smoking. I know that you are an adult and already know how bad smoking is for you or you wouldn’t be reading this article. Let’s concentrate on how you can stop the habit.

One way is nicotine replacement therapy but I don’t recommend it for a number of reasons. You are still addicted to nicotine and it doesn’t do anything to help that. In fact, it’s a more expensive version of nicotine!

Hypnotherapy is a much more interesting way to stop. It’s not 100% guaranteed but it is still highly effective. You’re conning your mind (not your body) into believing that it doesn’t need nicotine anymore. So you can be just like you were when you were younger and had not yet even touched a cigarette. Like I said, it works for many but you can relapse.

Cutting down on cigarettes. If you ask me, this is similar to NRT but maybe even worse. You just can’t wean yourself of cigarettes and you’ll end up going back.

Understanding nicotine’s relationship with your mind. Your body does not nicotine. Nicotine is a highly deceitful drug that tricks you into thinking that your body needs it when it does not. If you don’t believe this statement then nicotine has already tricked you! You must trust me, because I haven’t touched a cigarette for ten years. There are many tricks and tips that you can use to help you but if you understand nicotine’s false grip on your mind then you are halfway there.

When you receive the Seal you will start to take care of your health. A new study shows that if you cut calories or exercise more, you will receive an immediate improvement in the health of your heart.

The study tracked people in their 50s who did not smoke and were a little overweight to quite overweight. None of them were obese–just overweight. None of them had diabetes, hardened arteries, high blood pressure, stroke, or cancer.

And none of those studied had exercised enough before they participated in the study. They were divided into two groups. One group restricted their calories up to 15 percent without exercising.

The other group exercised for an hour a day six days a week but did not change the amount of calories they took in. Both groups lost weight, and both groups saw an immediate improvement in heart health.

This study shows something new: health improvements for you when you lose weight are immediate. You do not have to lose weight just to prevent a possible future disease. You can improve your health right now by losing a moderate amount of weight.

And this study shows that you can get heart health improvements immediately regardless of whether you lose weight by cutting calories alone or exercising alone. Of course if you do both you will still have the immediate improvement.

The researchers who conducted this study say it is virtually guaranteed that you heart health will improve when you lose moderate weight. And you do not have to be morbidly obese to see the improvement–just overweight.

Diastole is when the heart expands and fills with blood, ready to contract and drive that blood out and through the blood vessels. These researchers measured the diastolic stage of the heart cycle.

After a year of cutting calories or exercising most days of the week, the participants in the study each lost 12 percent of their body weight and their body mass index was lowered by 12 percent.

Both kinds of participants experienced the renewed ability of their hearts to relax more quickly during diastole, just like their hearts could when they were younger. And the calorie-cutting group had an even greater reduction in heart stiffness.

This study is important to you if you are overweight, as so many people in the West now are. It shows the immediate benefits you gain in your health–that your heart becomes more relaxed and less stiff just like it was when you were younger.

So you do not have to wait for dubious health benefits that only come in the form of preventing diseases that there is some chance you might not get. You will get this health benefit right away. You will restore your heart to the way it was when you were younger.

And if you choose to lose weight by cutting calories your heart will be restored to an even younger age. Cutting calories even more important than exercise in restoring your youthful vigor, losing weight, and lengthening your life.

When you are sealed God will give you the power to cut calories and exercise more. God will give you the motivation to exercise enough to stay fit as you grow older. And God will show you how to completely change your diet.

When you are sealed God will help you take care of your health. He wants to give you a longer life and a better life. Losing weight by cutting calories or exercising (or both) will give you a longer and better life, and God will help you do it when you receive the Seal.

You will be surprise at how many of the food we normally eat are high blood pressure natural remedies. They can be found in your kitchen!

Bananas:

Studies have proven that banana can help to lower blood pressure. Three to four servings of potassium-rich fruits and vegetables are needed daily for an average person. It is believed that by increasing this amount by two fold can benefit your high blood pressure condition. Other fruits that work the same way is: winter squash, baked sweet potatoes, cantaloupe, spinach, dried apricots, boiled potatoes with skin, orange juice, raisins and currants

Canola, mustard seed, or safflower oils:

Cooking with polyunsaturated oils can both lower your cholesterol and blood pressure.

Breads:

Homocysteine is found around your blood. This substance in great amount is suppose too lower the stretching ability of your arteries. If you have stiff arteries, this translate to extra work for your heart to pump the blood around. Folate lowers the amount of homocysteine which thus makes your arteries more elastic. Folate can be found in beans, cereals, brussels sprouts and asparagus.

Milk:

eafy green vegetables and milk prevents high blood pressure. This is due to the calcium that is found in them. But bear in mind to drink skim milk or eat low fat yogurt.

Broccoli:

This vegetable contains a lot of fibre which is helpful in lowering blood pressure. Therefore, remember to consume vegetables there are high in fibre. They work as high blood pressure natural remedies.

Celery:

A photochemical called 3-N-butylphthalide is found in celery which decreases blood pressure. Celery is important as it is the only vegetable that contains this photochemical. Stress hormones that narrows blood vessels can be lowered by eating celery. Therefore, this vegetable is very effective in dealing with high blood pressure which is due to mental stress.

Cayenne Pepper:

Cayenne pepper prevents platelets from coming together and thus facilitating good blood flow. You can include this spice in your meal by adding cayenne pepper to the salt-free seasonings listed in the Recipe Box below, or add a dash to a salad or in salt-free soups.

Vitamin C:

Vitamin C is an antioxidant which prevents free radicals from damaging artery walls and might also lower high blood pressure. You can take either eat food rich in it or simply take supplements.

You should employ these high blood pressure natural remedies to keep your blood pressure in check. However, you should still continue with your regular visits to the doctors to monitor your condition.

Diseases of the heart and blood vessels (particularly the arteries) are not only the single biggest cause of death in the modern world, particularly the Western world, but the most preventable.

Together they kill almost as many people as all other diseases together, including cancer, particularly in northern Europe and North America.

Most heart and arterial disease is caused by poor eating and living habits (including smoking), stress, lack of exercise and excess weight. More than half the people who are overweight die of heart disease or related problems such as stroke, for example, while in most Western countries an increasing number of quite young people, even teenagers, are suffering from advanced arterial disease.

Yet both conditions seem to be almost unknown among primitive societies - which is why they are often called “the classic diseases of civilization” and why they are variously estimated to be about 95 percent preventable. Recent research, particularly in the United States, has shown that the same factors that can cause disease can also reverse it if turned around.

Balanced diet, exercise, relaxation, and healthy living generally have now been shown to be capable of unclogging arteries and reenergizing the heart. For this reason, alternative medicine has moved to the forefront in many countries in the treatment of heart and arterial disease, and could become more important than conventional management drugs in the years ahead.

Heart, blood vessels, and blood make up the circulai system, which circulates blood around your body.

Blood carries oxygen from the air to “fuel” the cells, nutrients to feed the body, and other chemicals, such as hormones, essential for the body’s function, repair, and maintenance as well as protection against disease.

Poor Circulation

The heart pumps the blood, arteries carry it from the heart, and veins return it to the heart. Normally, the heart pumps about 10pt/51 of blood per minute around the body. However, if the blood flow is restrictead for some reason, circulation is slowed down. Poor circulation occurs mainly in the elderly and most often affects the areas farthest from the heart. Medically the condition is known generally as peripheral ischemia and can result in a wide range of symptoms, from cold hands and feet and cramp, to gangrene in extreme cases, where an area of tissue dies and starts to decay. Poor circulation is usually the result of the combined effect of a less healthy heart and narrowed and hardem arteries, normally as a result of age. Smoking is the most common cause but it can also be a concomitant symptom of diabetes, infection, long exposure to cold.

Treatment

Treatment should concentrate on stopping smoking and increasing the supply of blood to the area by helping the blood vessels to expand and the heart to pump more effectively. Improvement in the quality of the blood, particularly its red cell count, should also be sought.

Massage This is a good way to stimulate the circulation in any condition. Do not massage directly over injuries (cuts, bruises, or breaks), inflamed veins (phlebitis), varicose veins, or tumors. Alternatives to massage are reflexology and aromatherapy with black pepper and rosemary essential oils.

Hypnosis/Biofeedback Temperature biofeedback training may help to raise the temperature of the extremities.

Diet and Nutrition In addition to a generally healthy diet, eat plenty of oily fish such as mackerel, herring, salmon, and tuna. Food supplements recommended are vitamin A, C, E, selenium, zinc, manganese, and the essential fatty acids EPA and GLA.

Herbal Medicine The following herbs are widely believed to act as tonics on the blood: garlic, hawthorn berries (crataegus), echinacea, ginger, cayenne, chili and black pepper, prickly ash, and hops.

Cholesterol is a soft, waxy fatty substance found in the bloodstream and the cells of the body. It is produced in the liver for normal body functions like formation of cell membranes, production of hormones, vitamin D and bile acid. Cholesterol is also present in the food we eat. Animal products like meat, poultry, eggs, and dairy products usually contains high cholesterol levels compared to fish while on the other hand, plant products like fruits, vegetables, grains, nuts, seeds and the like contains no cholesterol at all.

Although cholesterol is needed by our bodies to function properly, high levels of cholesterol in the blood, a condition called hypercholesterolemia is a key risk factor for developing coronary heart diseases like atherosclerosis and heart attack.

In the last few years, cholesterol has got some real bad press and publicity, but what we should know is that “CHOLESTEROL IS NOT BAD ALL BY ITSELF”. Cholesterol can be further subdivided into two types - the HDL (high density lipoproteins) and LDL (low density lipoproteins) cholesterol. HDLs are also known as the “good cholesterol” while LDL is dubbed as the “bad cholesterol”. That being said, cholesterol only takes on a bad name when you consume foods that are high in bad cholesterols or the LDLs.

If your LDL level rises out of control, that’s when plaque or fatty deposits starts to accumulate on the artery walls - leading to more pressing health problems like coronary artery diseases. You shouldn’t get rid of cholesterol in your body totally, just aim to maintain a good balance. Here are 7 natural ways to help you achieve your goal:

Consume more fiber. Eating a lot of soluble fibers like those found in barley, wheat and oats greatly helps in lowering cholesterol levels in the body.
Spice up your food. Studies shows that spices like chilies and hot peppers which contains capsaicin and garlic have beneficial effect in lowering cholesterol levels in the body. Half raw onion per day also increases HDL by 30% and including raw garlic in your diet decreases LDL levels.
Achieve/Maintain an ideal weight. If you are obese or overweight, you definitely have high level of cholesterol compared to others. You should lose weight and consume less high-glycemic foods such as refined grains. These foods raise the insulin level in the blood which then fuels and fires up our body’s cholesterol making machines.
Get moving. Regular exercises are proven to be the most effective way to lower LDLs and boost up HDLs in the body.
Stop smoking. If you are a smoker, you should consider stopping now! Smoking for a fact worsens high cholesterol levels in the body.
Drink red wine or orange juice everyday. It is believed that drinking orange juice increases HDL level by approximately 21% due to presence of flavonoids. On the other hand, red wine is rich in antioxidants which can reduce damage due to oxidation.
Consider herbal/natural/nutritional supplements. Herbal and natural supplements like guggulipid, fish oil supplement, policosanol, red yeast rice, psyllium, grapefruit pectin, flax seed and garlic are clinically proven to lower LDL cholesterol levels.
