Everywhere you look there are articles and advertisements about the problem of hair loss in men. Male pattern baldness is a problem for which there are many remedies in the market - some more effective than others - but there is relatively little discussion of the fact that hair loss affects women, too.

In many ways, female hair loss can be more damaging to a woman’s dignity, self-confidence and quality of life. While this loss can be a difficult issue for men, it is more common in men to suffer from baldness. Because it is less prevalent in women, loss of hair can have a far more unsettling psychological and emotional effect.

Female hair loss is, sadly, often taken less seriously by family, friends or even physicians. This only serves to exacerbate the troubling and worrying effects it can have. The decreased self-esteem, anxiety and depression that can result from female hair loss are potentially debilitating. What’s more, it is unnecessary, as there are treatments available that can stop it in its tracks.

Hair growth problems in women may sometimes be overlooked as a ‘normal’ phenomenon, perhaps associated with advancing age or as a result of a genetic trait within a family. Sometimes temporary loss in hair can be associated with pregnancy and the changes in hormones that it brings. But female hair loss should not be considered a normal occurrence.

The first step in treatment is to take the problem seriously and recognise it as something that can be treated. The process of treatment then begins with finding the cause of the less hair growth.

There are many possible causes of female hair loss. Androgenetic alopecia is the most common and occurs in around 20% of women and causes thinning of hair over the central scalp. Alopecia areata causes patchy loss of hair on the scalp and eyebrows. Telogen effluvium causes shedding of hair across the entire scalp and loose anagen syndrome causes hair to shed before its normal growth cycle is complete, so hair may be pulled out by normal brushing. There are other causes too, such as reactions to chemicals in hair styling products, or trichotillomania, which is compulsive plucking of the hair.

For all of these conditions there are treatments. The only non-surgical approach is the use of Minoxidil - or Rogaine - to abate loss of hair, though responses to this treatment vary for each person. The surgical procedure of micro-follicular grafting is often the best choice for a woman and has a high rate of success.

Clinics that successfully perform such procedures report that because the women they treat usually have only thinned hair - not widespread hair loss - it is common that no sign of the procedure will be obvious once the healing process is complete.

In short, there is no need for women to suffer in silence if they are experiencing lesser hair growth. Treatments are available that can readily solve the problem in the majority of cases. Never accept female hair loss as normal.

Feeling bloated? Bloating in women is very common… like you didn’t know that! But did you know that some of the simplest culprits are things that we never think will bloat us!

To avoid the “bloated” syndrome avoid these few things…

1) Raw foods that tend to be more bulkier than their cooked counterparts. Instead of a cup of raw carrots try a cup of cooked it takes up less room inside.

2) Watch out for the salt shaker… I think this one we all know. Water is attracted to salt, and women especially tend to hold excess water after eating salty foods.

3) Watch out for excess carbs. When our body stores carbs it stores them in a type called glycogen - but each gram of glycogen takes about 3 grams of water. So, excess carbs mean your body is storing more water.

4) Watch out for those gassy foods… this should be a no brainer… gassy foods will definitely cause bloating. Some of the more common culprits are broccoli, cabbage, brussel sprouts, onions, peppers, citrus, legumes, and cauliflower.

5) Watch out for sugar substitutes… these are often found in sugar free cookies or snacks and even energy bars. Sugar alcohols cause gas, bloating, and sometimes even diarrhea…( Ahhh… that reminds me of a story… a dear friend of mine had gotten a box of sugar free candy for Christmas, and it was so good she at the whole box. I think you can probably end the story for me!)

6) Watch out for chewing gum… yes, it’s true chewing gum can cause bloating. As you chew you swallow air, and of course when you swallow it goes into your digestive tract.

7) Watch out for spicy foods…spicy foods can irritate the stomach and cause bloating.

8) Watch out for fried foods… fried fatty foods are digested more slowly and cause you to feel bloated.

9) Air travel… wow… this is getting ridiculous. Is there anything that doesn’t cause bloating? No really, the average plane’s air pressure is kept between 5,000 and 8,000 feet above sea level (to provide a comforable atmosphere for the passengers). At this pressure the available air within body cavities begins to expand by about 25%. Then as the pressure in the cabin drops the air in your intestines expands again causing… bloating.

10) Watch out for a lack of sleep… make sure that you get at least 7 hours of sleep a night. Enough sleep allows for your digestive tract to function properly.

The painkiller drugs or pain medications are widely used drugs for getting relief from pain. The pain medications have over the time proved beneficial in bringing much needed relief from pain due to surgeries, back injuries, arthritis, and migraine etc. Apart from its pain relieving properties, painkiller drugs have potential to cause addiction and have various side effects. The painkiller drugs reduce pain either by suppressing the formation of chemicals in body that cause pain or by binding to the opioid receptors of Central Nervous System (CNS).

Classification

The painkiller drugs are classified mainly into two types: Non-Narcotic and Narcotic.

Non-Narcotic painkiller drugs: The Non-Narcotic type includes the Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs). The NSAIDs work by stopping the formation of chemicals that cause pain in the body. Some of the common painkillers under NSAID type are Ibuprophen and acetaminophen.

Narcotic painkiller drugs: Narcotic painkiller drugs can be further divided into opiates and opioids. Opiates are narcotic opioid alkaloids found naturally in poppy plant. Opioids are chemical substances that bind to opioid receptors in CNS. Opioids are used in medications for their analgesic property to get relief from pain. However, the opioids also have potential to cause addiction.

The painkiller drugs also loosely include Paracetamol, Tricyclic antidepressants, and Anticonvulsants.

Medical Use of Painkillers

The painkiller drugs are mostly used for their pain relieving properties. The most common painkiller is Aspirin which is used to cure minor pains, aches, to reduce fever, and as an anti-inflammatory medication. Aspirin is also used for its anti-clotting effect. Small doses of it are used for long term to prevent heart attack, strokes, and blood clot formation. Painkillers are mostly used to cure minor aches, headache, muscular ache, tooth ache, back ache, joint pains, arthritis, migraine, and in recovering from surgery. The painkillers are also used to treat pain due to inflammation.

Side Effects

Addiction

Apart from its analgesic properties, the painkillers can also cause severe addiction due to the feeling of euphoria they create. Many Over-The-Counter (OTC) and Prescription painkillers are abused due to addiction. When used under prescription, painkillers reduce pain but when abused it can have several adverse effects on health. Many people get addicted to painkillers particularly after surgery as they take painkillers for long term to numb the pain but develop tolerance and require higher doses every time. The patient can not cope up with the withdrawal symptoms and becomes dependent on the effects which the painkiller gives.

Cardiovascular Effects

Researches have shown that painkillers use can lead to cardiovascular complications, slowing down of heart rate, and even possible heart attack (myocardial infarction). Taking more than prescribed amount of painkillers can cause fluctuations in the heart rate. The possible side effects of painkillers on heart include thrombosis (blood clot) and stroke.

Constipation

Painkillers can also cause constipation among the persons taking them under prescription. Some laxative substances should be used while using painkillers. Patients should ensure that they take high fibrous diet and consume lot of water and other liquids while using painkillers.

Consuming painkillers containing opioids can even cause mental side effects like hallucinations, confusion, nightmares etc. Patients should consult the doctor before taking painkiller medications and take medications in prescribed amount.

Most of us have seen the ads on television or in magazines showing beautiful people flashing dazzling white teeth. And, most of us think it is impossible to achieve that kind of brightness without spending a fortune at the dentists’ office. In fact, even with the dozens of over-the-counter whitening products offered at your local grocery or drug store, 85 percent of the population has never tried them. Is it that they don’t believe they work? Or, perhaps they think their own teeth are so stained that nothing that easy and affordable would give them the results they desire? Well, think again! Now you can whiten your teeth in the privacy and convenience of your own home, and it doesn’t have to cost you an arm and a leg.

I’ll be the first one to tell you that in-office, professional whitening can give you greater results in a shorter period of time, but when your pocketbook prohibits you from going that route, it shouldn’t keep you from whitening your teeth at home. Let me give you some helpful pointers and realistic facts about teeth whitening at home.

Facts and Fiction about At-home Teeth Whitening

• First of all, the whitening toothpastes do work on cleaning surface stains and slight yellowing or graying. It is better to first brush with a mixture of baking soda, lemon juice, and salt before your whitening toothpaste. You actually could stop after the baking soda mixture, but the toothpaste will probably leave a more pleasant taste in your mouth after brushing.

• Over-the-counter whitening strips and tray-based gel trays also work. The difficulty comes when the tray doesn’t conform to the shape of your particular mouth. Since they are designed as a one-size-fits-all, you may find them to be awkward or somewhat uncomfortable. Some people like the strips better than the tray method for that reason. Although this method is effective, it takes diligence and frequency. Be sure to continue the process even if you don’t see immediate results.

• Many people think whitening their teeth will make their teeth and gums hurt. While this can be true in some people, for others it causes no sensitivity or discomfort. Don’t overdo the process, though, thinking you’ll get better whitening results. Those who fail to follow the product instructions more frequently experience pain and discomfort.

• Some people use the excuse that they cannot afford to use whitening products, even in-home methods, because the cost is more than their budget can tolerate. That is a matter of personal finances, but you may want to think of what it is costing you not to whiten your teeth. Certainly, whitening your teeth at home is the most reasonable method if you need to stay within a budget. If not whitening your teeth at home is costing you your self-esteem and confidence, then I say it’s much less expensive to simply get a kit and whiten those discolored teeth.

There are many claims made especially on the Internet that Fat Burning Furnace is the quickest way to lose weight. Could this be true or is this another one of the lofty claims made by many that ends up to be false.

What is the Fat Burning Furnace Weightloss Program?

It is a 158 page book written by Rob Poulos. He was someone who struggled with his weight since he was a child and followed many exercise and weight loss programs to no avail. This is a program he devised to lose fat and build lean muscle. Most importantly this has helped him to maintain a healthy weight and keep his body trim and muscular for several years now.

How does the Fat Burning Furnace Program Work?

The program consists of 2 weight loss aids.

Exercises to lose weight

The exercise routine comprises of simple exercises that use only free weights and can be completed in 20 minutes. Unlike most free weight routines which require 3 or more sets to be completed, the exercises laid out here require only one set to be completed. The workout routine uses compound exercises and as a result burn more fat. He also clearly lays out the time to take with each step of the routine like 5 seconds to lift the weight overhead and 6 seconds to lower it etc. This I found really helpful and helps to maximize the workout your muscles get without over stretching them. As you are doing only 1 set these exercises are what I would call short and sharp. It certainly gets the work done in toning your muscles and burning the fat.

Weight loss meal plan

When it comes to losing weight it doesn’t matter how hard and long you exercise if you keep eating the wrong types of food and don’t keep an eye on the amount you are consuming you are going to lose the battle against weight loss. Rob covers the effect of food and what types of food will maximise weight loss and build your muscles. There is a basic menu plan and a link to a website that gives a lot of recipes to help you lose weight fast. Gives you enough that even if you are a vegetarian you can follow this program. I found this part of the program slightly lacking a more detailed weight loss menu or some quick weight loss diets would have made this program really stand out.

One thing I found really helpful with this program is the email coaching and updates you receive. This really keeps you motivated and on track to keep on going.

So we come to the question is this the quickest way to lose weight? What I can say with confidence is that this is a weight loss program that has been proven to work. It is one of the most popular weight loss programs on the internet today and has had many hundreds of weight loss success stories and testimonials.

Even though I am not bold enough to claim that this is the quickest way to lose weight Fat Burning Furnace is one of my top picks and since it is so cheap and comes with a 100% money back guarantee you have only got your weight to lose by trying this program.

It’s time to take control of your weight and if many thousands can do it so can you! lose weight fast

Are you wondering how to boost your body to burn fat calories quicker? Losing weight can be a long and misguided path if you don’t take the time to learn what actually works and what’s a waste of time. Once you understand how to lose weight, then you have to figure out how to lose the right weight which is the fat.

To burn fat calories, you have to take a more designed approach than just exercising and eating less. You have to look deeper into aspects of both exercise and nutrition. In this article, I will give you 3 great tips to help boost your fat loss, and help you quickly transform your body into the shape you’ve been wanting.

1. What to eat.

Nutrition plays a vital role in all aspects of exercise and fitness. If you are wanting to lose weight, gain muscle, or even recover from an injury, you will want to play close attention to what you’re putting into your body. Since today’s article focuses on how to burn fat calories, I will stay on track with that path.

Like I mentioned before, it is more than just eating less. It’s about what foods you are taking in. First, never forget the basics. Stay away from foods with high sugar content (except fruit), highly fatty foods, and fried foods. Start replacing your carbohydrates with whole wheat products like pastas and breads. Eat lots of vegetables and fruits. Vegetables will give you the feeling of fullness which helps cut down on the unwanted snacks. Fruits are your friend. I know they have high sugar content but the benefits that each fruit is full of out weigh the fructose loaded food’s cons.

Don’t drop your calories too low either. If you start eating too little food, your body will believe it is starving. In the starving state, your mind wants to keep all the long term energy it can to survive. What does our body use for long term energy? That’s right, fats. You have to find that happy medium of calorie intake so that your not throwing your body into ketosis.

2. How to do cardio.

Doing cardio all day isn’t going to get the perfect results you’ve been wanting. To burn fat calories at a higher rate, you want to pay attention to how hard your cardio is. This all comes down to your heart rate during exercise.

When your heart rate is at different percentages of your max heart rate, your body burns a different proportion of carbs, fats, and proteins. For a close measure of what your perfect heart rate is for burning fat, consider getting your VO2 max tested. Without getting tested you can still estimate the best range. Keeping your heart rate between 60-70% of your max heart rate will yield the best results to burn fat calories. To find your max heart rate, subtract your age from 220.

A cardio session of 60-70% will be slower cardio pace. You don’t have to workout long hours at a rigorous pace to get the results you want.

Try these tips out and I’m sure you will burn the fat calories quickly.

Being overweight can cause a person many different problems, from those that are associated with their health to self esteem and confidence issues. If you are overweight and want to shed those excess pounds you might be one of the millions of people world wide who feel as though you have tried every diet going but still find it hard to lose weight, and this can be very upsetting.

Losing weight is something that is personal to every person as no two people can lose exactly the same amount of weight on the same diet as we all have different rates of loss. Some people are lucky enough to drop pounds if they cut something out of their diet for a while or start to exercise more, however others might do this and produce no results at all. And these are the people who tend to look out for a fast weight loss diet.

It is sometimes all too tempting to find a fast weight loss diet and begin in it the hope that you will soon be a slim line version of your former self and feel good - but is it at the risk of your health? If you are looking to start a diet that will provide you with fast weight loss yet remain healthy it is important that you remember to eat at least 5 portions of fruit and vegetables every day - more if possible, limit your intake of fat and fatty foods, drink plenty of water to stay hydrated and take regular exercise. Doing this will create a negative calorie balance and will help you to lose weight. One of the worst things you can do is to miss meals or give yourself portions that are too small - so you must eat at least three meals each day and two low calorie snacks.

Worried about inviting a friend with food allergies to your child’s birthday party? Which foods are safe? Which are not? What if the child has a reaction? Food allergies are on the rise among children. This can present a challenge when planning your child’s birthday party. A few helpful tips in the party preparation can ensure a safe fun memorable birthday celebration for all.

Most parents of a food allergic child understand that you will not feed their child a food containing the specific allergen. For example, you would not serve a cake with nuts or a peanut butter sandwich to a child with a peanut or nut allergy. The concern for parents is the cross-contamination of foods that might be considered safe.

Cross-contamination is when a “safe” food comes in contact with the allergen. One way cross-contamination can occur is through shared utensils and /or shared manufacturing equipment. This is often the case with birthday cakes that are purchased from a bakery. Even though the cake may not have nuts, it “may contain” nuts because it was made on equipment that also makes other products with nuts.

Communication with a child’s parent prior to the party can alleviate concerns. Discussing what will be served at the party, as well as safe food options, helps to avoid surprises. It is best to gain as much information about food restrictions or safety concerns prior to the celebration. This will allow you time to plan safe foods or to contact the parent if you are unable to make changes to your menu. In addition, this gives the parent the information they need to determine if they are comfortable having their child attend.

When inviting your child’s class to a party and do not know all the students, it is nice to ad a line to the invitation “If your child has a food allergy please contact us, so we can discuss safe options”.
If a child has food allergies, the parent may opt to bring their own food and only allow their child to eat the food they brought to the party. Do not take offense. They are being respectful of your time as well as the safety of their child. Most parents of food allergic children are used to providing a special cupcake or treat for their child.

Children with food allergies often carry an Epi-pen. This is emergency medication which is used to temporarily counteract an allergic reaction. If the parent will be leaving a child at the party with medication or an Epi-Pen, you may want to meet the parent prior to the party to review medical treatment/training. It is important that you or another adult at the party is comfortable with administering medication, and understands what steps to take in the event of an allergic reaction. If you are not comfortable, you may want to ask the parent to stay and provide an assignment (i.e. photographer, food server, game timer) so that they feel useful, and their child does not feel as though the parent is there solely to watch over them.

If you feel comfortable having the parent drop off their child, it is nice to leave all the food packages out or available should they want to confirm ingredients. While you may have gone over this, having the parent look at the labels can provide additional comfort for both you and the parent.

Another safe idea is to use more non edible items when possible. For example, there are numerous fun party favors that can replace candy in pinatas. Children love little toys for prizes. Party bags can include toys or crafts that were made at the party.

Taking a few extra steps prior to the party will eliminate uncomfortable or potentially unsafe situations. Parents will be so grateful for the time you took to ensure a safe environment for their child. Your child’s birthday is a special day, they’ll appreciate that you made it possible for them to include all of their friends. With some planning and communication both you and your guests can relax and enjoy your child’s party.

http://www.beyondapeanut.com Dina Clifford is the mother of two children with life-threatening peanut allergies. She has developed “Beyond A Peanut - Food Allergy Awareness Cards” which teach principles to provide a safe environment for children with food allergies. Specific examples teach children and those who are care for them that staying safe with a peanut or tree nut allergy goes beyond the nut product itself. The flashcards introduce cross-contamination, the importance of label reading and always carrying emergency medication. You can learn more about the cards at www.beyondapeanut.com

Coping with allergies as an adult is not difficult, but handling allergies in children, particularly small ones is quite a daunting task. Children are often prone to food allergies and it is also difficult to expect them to resist foods that other children in school or siblings at home are eating.

Handling the problem of food allergy in a child will require the child’s participation as well, because as he grows older, he is increasingly away from parental supervision and vigil. Therefore it becomes important to explain everything to the child, that is, the types of food he is allergic to, the result of eating those foods, how they react inside his body, and to make it easier, give examples of others with food allergies. The child has to be told never to eat those foods, even while sharing snacks and goodies with friends at school. The early pre-school and elementary years in school are difficult, as children of that age tend to forget. The younger the child, the more often he must be reminded about his allergy, as he grows older, his repeatedly hearing the same warning would make him naturally cautious. Once he is old enough he will even be able to read food labels and identify the foods he is allergic to. Eventually it becomes a habit to ask if the food contains nuts or wheat or whatever the child is allergic to.

Food allergies in children cannot just be handled by parents and the child alone. It is important to inform his school about it, all his teachers need to know, along with the school nurse, day care provider, relatives and parents of the child’s peer group. Most mistakes leading to allergic reactions take place outside the home in the absence of the parent. Therefore it is preferable to give the child food packed from home even when he goes to visit friends.

Utmost care has to be given in feeding an allergy-prone child even at home. Labels of all ready to eat foods must be read and those that can be potentially hazardous must be kept away. Nowadays labels carry warnings about nuts and wheat, as many children are found to be allergic to them. Labels must be checked repetitively as recipes and ingredients of ready foods are modified all the time. Being alert at all times while serving and cooking is crucial for the child’s health. Food allergies in children can be harsh and the reaction difficult to control.

Even while eating out with the child the parents have to be on guard. First they have to ask about the ingredients of various preparations in the restaurant, bakery, deli or fast food joint. Children sensitive to milk and milk products cannot even have meat cut with the same knife as cheese. So it is for the parent to check if all the food is made in one place, if different knives and chopping boards are used, the ingredient of various preparations and so on. If the child is allergic to peanuts, the parent has to check that peanut oil should not be the cooking medium.

Caution and prevention are the best options to preempt any chance of an allergic reaction. But should an allergic reaction set in despite all precautions, medication has to be kept handy. The child must always carry his medication for reactions at all times, in his school bag, in his play-kit and so on. One set of medicines must be left in school and with the school nurse, along with instructions about how the medicines must be given. The child must also know what to do in case of a reaction.

It hurts to watch your child suffer with food related allergies. It is time to change all of that and learn what are the common causes of allergies in children.

If you are looking for information on the link between thyroid problems and depression, then you should read this article. You will learn about how thyroid problems affect depression, what types of depression are common in people who have this problem and the type of treatments that are used to treat the thyroid and depression. After reading this article you should have a good understanding of the effects these two conditions have on each other.

Research suggests that some forms of depression are more common in people who suffer from thyroid problems. One form of depression that frequently affects people with this problem is bipolar disorder, also known as manic depressive disorder. This form of depression is characterized by manic or hypomanic episodes which cause the individual to suffer from a variety of symptoms which include: Periods of hyperactivity, euphoria, and excitement followed by periods of fatigue, sleeping problems as well as appetite problems. These are just a few of several symptoms that may be experienced. A sufferer may display a few specific symptoms for anything from a few days to a few weeks before a different set of symptoms come into play.

If you or someone that you know seems to be suffering from the symptoms mentioned above, medical should be sought as soon as possible. A physician will be able to carry out some tests which will give him a proper diagnosis of the type of depression that has developed. He available or she will also be able to advise you on the various types of medication available that are used to treat bipolar depression and the mood swings that accompany it.

One of the most effective forms of treatment for this particular type of depression is lithium. However this form of medication must be taken with extra care if it is being used by someone who has bipolar depression. This is because lithium can alter the functioning of the thyroid which is a problem, because this causes the levels of thyroid hormone to drop which can cause various symptoms to appear. Lithium causes this drop in thyroid hormone because it blocks the manufacture of the thyroid hormone.

As a result doctors measure the level of thyroid hormone in a patient who has been prescribed lithium after 2-4 weeks of using the medication. If you suffer from problems with your thyroid and depression the doctor must be informed so he can keep track of the levels of thyroid hormone in your body.

Anti depressants can also lower the levels of thyroid hormones in the body, so the doctor will check the levels of thyroid hormone in his patients’ body after a month or so of using the medication. Some of the most common types of antidepressants that can lower thyroid hormone levels include Paxil, Prozac, Lexapro and Zoloft to name but a few.

Now that you have read this article you should have a basic understanding of the link between thyroid and depression drugs.

Do the holidays make you feel sad? Do you ever feel depressed for no reason? For a lot of people, depression is a very real, upsetting, time consuming thing that sucks up a lot of our energy. When people talk about weight gain, usually you hear about it in terms of: a death in the family, going away to college, having children, not making the sports team in high school, being injured as a result of being on a sports team, breaking up with a boyfriend or girlfriend, getting divorced or any other thing along those lines.

For many people weight gain is due to depression, feelings of guilt or sadness. It can also be due to living a sedentary lifestyle. For example, when my grandfather died, my grandmother became a recluse, staying in her house the majority of the time. She was depressed and resorted to eating as a way to fill the void. She would make her favorite dishes that she would cook for her husband when he was alive. It was easy for her to eat since the refrigerator was right there. There are actual medical facts which show that carbohydrates in foods stimulate serotonin production. As you may recall, serotonin is that chemical that your brain releases which regulates things such as anger, aggression, body temperature, mood, sleep sexuality and apetite.

The best way to battle depression is to be honest with yourself and try to understand your emotions and what you are feeling. Sometimes, people who are depressed don’t even realize that they are depressed. And if they do realize that they have a problem, sometimes they need to seek the advice and help of a professional such as a psychologist, philosopher, psychiatrist or some other medical doctor. If you can, keep a diary to record how you are feeling as well as how you were feeling just prior to eating something as well as how you felt afterwards. This information may be invaluable as well as insightful into telling you how or what it is that is triggering you to eat. Before you open up the refrigerator, ask yourself, “Am I really hungry? Why am I here again?”

The next time you feel the urge to eat something; try to distract yourself by getting some exercise. If you know that eating poorly or overeating is a problem for you, try to make sure that you are out of your apartment of house as often as possible, this way it will be easier for you to resist the temptation. If you do feel the urge to eat something, try to pick something healthier. If you happen to spend a lot of time at home (i.e. you work from home or you are a stay-at-home mom), the next time you go food shopping, only purchase healthy items to stock your house with, this way you won’t have a choice except to eat healthier. Join a gym or an exercise group. If you are married or in a relationship or have a close friend, confide in them and see if you can work together to get over your depression.

The truth is cardio training and aerobic exercise can become very monotonous and boring when you do it on a very regular basis. However, there are a number of things you can do to make your cardio workouts less monotonous, more exciting, and as a result, get much more out of them. If you follow the tips below, you will have more fun with your cardio training and get more out of your workouts.

The first thing you can do is to break the monotonous cycle of your cardio training is to switch the type of exercise you do regularly. Most people have their favorite machine or form of exercise that they like to do which is fine. However switching up the machine you use or the type of aerobic exercise you engage in will break the cycle of doing the same thing over and over. It will force you to likely use slightly different muscles and be nice a change from what you are accustomed to. An additional benefit is that you will eliminate any plateau/adaptation effect that comes from doing the same exercise over and over.

You see the more and more you do a particular cardio routine on the same piece of equipment (or form of exercise), your body will naturally adapt to it. This can cause a plateau effect and result in you not getting as much benefit from the exercise when you first started. Switching up machines takes care of this and won’t allow your body to adapt to your routine, subsequently giving you more out of your workout.

Another great tip when it comes to getting more out of your cardio workout is to set goals for your workout and work to outdo your previous effort. If you get into the habit of doing the same routine over and over, it is very easy to go through the motions and not push yourself as much as you could.

However, if you set goals and track your performance, you can try to outdo yourself, and better your results. Say for example in one cardio session you burned 500 calories in a half hour. Next session set a goal to burn 525 or 550 calories. This will force you to work a little harder and allow you to get more from your workouts.

You will be amazed if you set goals and measure your progress regularly, just how much you can improve your performance, increase the amount of calories you burn, and increase the distance you travel. Make a game out of it and challenge yourself to reach your goals and try to continually outperform yourself. This will add an element of challenge and fun to your workouts and allow you to get much more out of them.

Take these tips and put them to use. If you do, you’ll be on your way to getting more out of your cardio workouts. The more you get out of your cardio workouts, the quicker you will reach your goals.

There is no question that moderate aerobic exercise has a role to play in fat loss. But as you progress into your program, cardio workouts can become a bit stale and time-consuming. Heck, I know some regular exercisers who probably wouldn’t do cardio if they couldn’t watch “American Idol” while on the treadmill. Now that’s fine, but if you want ongoing change you need to keep finding new ways to challenge your body. A great way to do that is to use Interval Training in your fitness routine.

Interval training involves alternating periods of high intensity work with periods of lower intensity “active recovery” (e.g. alternating running with walking). This has several advantages. First, the short duration “burst” during the high intensity phase stimulates muscle in a way which moderate, steady-pace cardio does not. And, if you remember, last month we learned that the key to being able to burn more calories and fat around the clock, 24 hours a day, is to increase muscle. Now if you’re thinking, “yeah, but didn’t he also say that high intensity cardio burns muscle tissue?” then you’re correct. The key is short duration, explosive spurts. Think of the physique of an elite sprinter vs. that of the marathon runner, and you’ll start to get the picture.

Aside from being muscle-producing, interval training also burns more total calories. In fact, there is evidence to suggest that this effect continues up to 24 hours after an intense interval training workout. This is most likely because your body expends more calories in recovering and repairing than it would for a less intense workout. Thus, it is possible for you to get a very effective cardio session in a lot less time. Great for those of us with hectic schedules!

Training with intervals is dynamic and challenging, which makes it a great deal more interesting than regular cardio. You can alternate a minute of skipping rope with pedaling a stationary bike, weighted step-ups with walking on the treadmill, even jogging up and down the stairs of your house or building, alternated with periods of walking circles around your dining-room table! There are so many possible variations.

Alright, so know that you know why it works, you’re probably wondering, “how can I start incorporating interval training into my workouts?” Well, I usually like to start clients off by doing intervals on a stationary or recumbent bike, because it’s simpler and there is less chance of injury. At first, each interval should be a bit longer, and the “active recovery” phase should be longer than the “sprint,” say 3 minutes compared to 2 minutes of high intensity. Try to use a perceived 80% effort for those two minutes, by the end of which your legs should be burning and you should have the feeling that you couldn’t keep going for very long. Do this by increasing the resistance and the speed of pedaling. Then, to get the most out your intervals, it’s important that you slow right down to a comfortable 30% output for the recovery phase. Repeat this process 3-6 times initially, but don’t forget to warm-up 5-10 minutes first, and cool down for about 5 minutes afterwards. The overall duration of your session should be between 15 and 35 minutes.

As you become more advanced, try to challenge yourself with shorter, more intense intervals, and equal periods of recovery. Try 4-10 intervals of 45 seconds at 90% effort, alternated with 45 seconds at 30%, and vary the type of cardio as well. As with anything type exercise, you will get maximum results if you start gradually and push yourself more and more as your strength and stamina improves.

Also, the best time for you to interval train is probably immediately after your resistance training workout, but because it is relatively brief, you may find it quite suitable to perform this workout as your AM cardio, as long as you properly warm up first.

So here it is in a nutshell. To make best use of interval training:

1. Warm up for 5-10 minutes
2. Alternate periods of 80% to 90% effort with periods of 30% effort, depending on your level
3. Cool down for 5 minutes after
4. Start with longer periods and progress to shorter ones
5. As your strength and endurance improves, challenge yourself with different combinations, and more intense “bursts,” while simultaneously reducing rest periods

In recent years, a lot has been said for the effectiveness of interval training, and some even tout it as the fat loss solution. But that is misleading, and while I do believe interval training has it’s place in your fitness program, it’s just one piece of the puzzle. A puzzle which, I hope, is beginning to make more sense to you with each successive issue of this newsletter! Together with cardiovascular exercise, the right nutrition and resistance training are the three synergistic elements that will allow to achieve all your fat loss and fitness goals. Good luck!

I believe that it is part of my job as a fitness expert to bring the science to you. Much of what is currently out there is based in nothing but tradition and acceptance. I know that this weeks newsletter will come as a great surprise to the majority of you and you can do what you would like with the information that I am going to present in this edition. All I ask is that you at least give it some thought.

This may come as a shock to you, but to sculpt a lean, muscular, athletic and toned body, aerobic exercise is one of the worst ways to achieve this desired look. Aerobics means “with oxygen” and in terms of exercise, much of what is seen in the gym on the “cardio” equipment is aerobic. The reason I am quoting cardio is because cardio is not the same thing as aerobics, yet the two are used interchangeably everyday. All aerobic exercise is cardiovascular in nature, but not all cardiovascular exercise is aerobic. Cardio simply means any mode of exercise that stresses the cardiovascular system, so weight training is cardio too. Some other forms of aerobic athletics would include bicycling and marathons. Before I get into the science of this topic, just realize that aerobics did not become hugely popular until the late 70’s/early 80’s and the studies that were coming out regarding the benefits of aerobic exercise were funded and put out to the public by the companies that were making “cardio” equipment to put in all the gyms going up around the country. Think about the timing of everything, gyms did not start to become popular until this time when fitness was brought to the main stream by none other than one of my heroes, Arnold Schwarzenegger. Hmm, so all of the sudden, when gyms started exploding in this country, aerobics became great for us and studies just “happened” to coincide with this time period? I have no problem with aerobics if the person truly enjoys it. It can be a very stimulating experience. My problem is with the misapplication of aerobics to sculpt the lean physique that so may of us are after.

For those of you that have seen Pumping Iron, notice that Arnold was in the best shape of his career, yet he performs no aerobics, just intense weight training and dieting. When Arnold made his comeback to the bodybuilding stage in 1980, he too had bought into the aerobics revolution and the physique he brought to the stage was the smallest, softest and out of shape of his entire career. Aerobics train the nervous system and musculature system to become slow, it stresses our type I muscle fibers (slow twitch and red ones, remember this for later on). These are not the fibers that we want to stress if our goal were to gain some muscle and lose body fat, those fibers would be the type II fibers (fast twitch and white). So already, you can see that if you are performing intense resistance training and performing hours a week of aerobics, you are stressing two different systems, not a good thing. Lets examine the chicken and the duck. Now, you know that dark meat has a lot more fat than white meat. The chicken is predominantly white meat and the duck is predominantly dark meat. What makes the meat dark is myoglobin, which carries oxygen molecules to the muscle for work. The duck can fly for thousands of miles and the chicken cannot even get off the ground for more than a few seconds, yet the chicken is much more muscular and lean. Ducks are aerobic and they store fat for use very effectively. Aerobics trains the body to become very efficient at using fat and storing fat, because the predominant fuel source in aerobic exercise is fat. Did you ever hear of the “fat burning zone”? Throw it out the window; it is quite possibly one of the most misleading pieces of fitness information ever! If your car is more efficient at using fuel, is it going to use more or less of it? The correct answer is less of it, great for your wallet, but not your body if we are talking about efficiency of fat use for exercise. We want the hummer engine, the big gas-guzzler, the most fuel inefficient car we can find to burn body fat. To equate this to exercise, we want high intensity exercise with rest interspersed. We want a very large oxygen deficit. In a study by Tremblay et al, it was demonstrated that high-intensity exercise, specifically intermittent, supramaximal exercise, is the most optimal for fat loss. There were two groups, the long slow distance aerobic endurance group (LSD) that was on their program for 20 weeks and the high intensity interval training (HIIT) group that was on a program for 15 weeks. The amount of energy utilized (calories) by the LSD group was DOUBLE that of the HIIT group: however, six skin fold measurements demonstrated greater loss in the HIIT group than the LSD group. When this was expressed on a per energy basis, the HIIT group’s reduction in skin folds was 9X greater than the LSD group! That is what you call more bang for your buck (Willey, 2007). The HIIT group created large post-exercise oxygen consumptions (EPOC), which can take up to 48 hours to your body to fully recover from. This is where fat loss occurs. Not during the hours spent on the treadmill. In another published study by R. Bahr, performed at the department of physiology at the National Institute of Occupational Health in Oslo, Norway, it was demonstrated that low-intensity (defined as 65% of maximum heart rate for less than 1 hour) led to a total EPOC of only 5 calories. On the other hand, intensive exercise-where heart rate was above 85% of maximum, led to EPOC values up to 180 calories (Staley, 2005). As I have said in the past, the body is incredibly adaptive. What used to take 30 minutes on the cardio equipment to burn 300 calories, will soon take 40 minutes, then 45, then 50 etc. What you are doing is creating the body to be a fat storing super efficient fat burning machine! Think about it, do all those people at the gym that slave on those machines ever seem to change? Maybe when they first start, but it has been shown that with this type of exercise, the body becomes almost completely adapted after the first eight weeks. Go to any 5K, marathon or bike race and 60-70% of the people that cross the finish line are fat.

If the body is more efficient at burning and storing fat, this will also equate to a lowered metabolism, again, not a good thing. We are looking for exercise that takes the body hours to recover from (large EPOC). You will not even be aware of this recovery, but if you were put in a lab, oxygen debt would still be elevated for a few hours to 48 hours! Did you ever notice that even after running a few miles, you could hold a conversation during it or immediately following it? The human body recovers very quickly from aerobic exercise. This is not optimal for fat loss. For those of you aerobic athletes, there was another study done by Tabata in Japan that showed anaerobic interval training actually caused greater increases in AEROBIC capacity, more so than the group that actually performed aerobic running! That is just a piece of information to use when you want to switch up your training and do some shorter duration type of stuff.

Which is leaner and more muscular, the marathon runner or sprinter?

Sprinters such as Ben Johnson of Olympic infamy were known to go to McDonalds and see how many Big Macs they could eat, often downing 5-6 without a problem and staying shredded. These athletes have created those big gas-guzzling machines I was talking about earlier. Look at gymnasts; they never do aerobics, yet it can be argued that they have the best physiques of any group of athletes out there. Their training consists of explosive high intensity bouts of exercise, often with nothing more than their body weight.

In a different capacity, aerobic athletes, most notably marathon runners, are the most injured group of athletes in the world. Every time the foot strikes the ground, 3-5X the body weight is applied in force up through the skeletal system, OUCH! The stress hormone cortisol is also produced in very large amounts when the body is constantly performing aerobics. Despite what you see on those silly commercials, cortisol is essential to the human body, but high amounts will cause the accumulation of body fat, most visibly around the mid-section. High cortisol will also negatively impact your adrenal glands over time. Distance runners who train upward of 100 miles per week do not expend more than 800 to 1300 “extra” calories each day above their normal energy requirements (McArdle, 2001). Does that sound it was like their time of investment?

How do you make sure your exercise is intense enough? If you can hold a conversation once a set or interval is completed, you are more than ready to go again. Remember, you are trying to create a deficit. What about the really heavy person that lost massive amounts of weight from their aerobics program? They would have lost weight doing any form of activity that took them out of their sedentary state. The composition of weight lost also needs to be looked at. If you are just performing cardio, your precious muscle is being used as a fuel source, thus it is completely common for people to lose tons of weight, yet be a fatter, smaller version of their former self. This will happen because the composition of weight lost will come from muscle and fat, not predominantly fat. Some of you might say, but Kyle, “I have seen you doing cardio and you told me to do it in the past.” That is correct, but I also used to have a tail and bangs for my haircut, times changes, so does knowledge.

To wrap this up, you might be wondering why I seem so passionate about this topic. Well, I am getting ready for another bodybuilding show and in years past, I too would spend hours on cardio equipment trying to get “ripped”. Needless to say, I didn’t like my return on investment and the muscle that was becoming smaller do to being trained in a slow manner. What would often happen to me from such extreme dieting and hours upon hours of aerobics is that I would gain 30-35 pounds the next week when the competition was over because I had succeeded in creating the perfect “Fat Storing Machine”. I went through every book I could get my hands on to find a better way. What I found was simple, through diet and high intensity resistance exercise with incomplete recovery (beginning the next set before oxygen is fully restored) has led to my best and biggest shape ever! I perform sprints a couple of days per week, but that usually only takes about 10 minutes. Now here is the interesting part, my back has been acting up going into spasm. On those days, you can still find me on the stair-master. Why? Because emotionally and mentally I felt that I needed it. I just said the key words; gym goers have become emotionally dependent on their “cardio” equipment, feeling that if they miss a session, they will get fat. Again, think about the results you have been getting and really think if they are worth it. Most aerobic training is dependent upon an emotional attachment to it.

I know that many of you will be resistant to this idea and this concept may not even catch on in my lifetime. But I did enjoy making you aware of this information!

If you like to run and jog and ride bikes, great go for it, I am all for it. As I said before, I am. Activity is awesome, any kind. Just realize what benefits you are trying to get from it. I have been studying and trying systems of resistance training that allow me to get as “shredded” as I need to, without stepping foot on any more cardio equipment. I hope that this issue was enlightening to you or at least interesting. I would like to thank Scott Abel, a fantastic strength coach from Canada that has helped to change my view of how I approach fitness and exercise for the better.

Many people suffer with the skin condition known as acne or Zits; but there are now many treatments available which can help the condition so it is more bearable. It is one of those areas where research has continued to make advancements; the result of this effort is new, more effective, treatments are becoming available. Although there may seem like a huge range of acne skin care products, they can be broken down into three broad categories:

* Preventative: Creams, lotions etc. to help cleanse and tone the skin

* Those available at a drugstore or over-the-counter

* Prescription: Dermatologist or Doctor, specialist cream or ointment

Those that fall into the preventative category are based around general skin conditioning to help stop acne from forming; for example, special toners and skin cleansers. In the real sense, these products are just those that should be part of your daily routine; there use is not just confined to individuals who are suffer with the complaint. Other acne skin care products, like skin cleansers for instance, are more specific about their job; they ensure the facial pores (and other areas) remain free of oil. These types of products are reducing the chance of oil staying in the pores and aiding the growth of harmful bacteria which assists the formation of the skin condition.

Other skin care treatments can help exfoliate the skin; there is now a variety of this type of product available over the counter. Dead skin cells and other atmospheric pollutants are removed cleaning the pores which reduce the chance of any bacterial growth. There are specialized acne skin care products available over-the-counter, they do not require the need of a prescription. A bacterium that aids the formation of acne is stopped by creams and cleansers that contain benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid; these include products which extract the unwanted oil from the skin.

It is often a good idea to start with a product that has lower concentration of benzoyl peroxide (e.g. 5 percent) to see how the skin responds; if a reaction occurs, a cleaner or cream containing alpha hydroxy acid should be safe. It might just be a case of trial and error to find an acne skin care product that works; if finding something that works is proving difficult, your dermatologist should be able to help. If you do need to see your doctor or skin care specialist then he may give you a prescription for antibiotics or special ointments.

Under certain circumstances, having the infected material removed from the pores under a local anesthetic may be suggested by your dermatologist; although this is a minor procedure, if it were performed by the person themselves it could result in skin damage. Your doctor may even suggest a course of hormone therapy as a skin care treatment; hormone changes are known to be one cause of acne. Positive research means that a sufferer does not have to put up with this condition anymore.

Cleaning and feeding nutrition to the skin and being able to remove dead skin effectively, allows acne sufferers to develop a healthier complexion. Diet change is also a very effective way of banishing acne alongside an overall healthy lifestyle.

One area that does not very often get addressed when dealing with the causes of acne is the physiological level. Often these physical eruptions are the boy’s way of expressing unexpressed emotions - such as anger, frustration and a general lack of self confidence.

When these are taken into account and deal with positively, many have found that the facial condition subsides markedly.

One of the greatest gifts that anyone who is suffering from acne can give themselves is to recognize this side of it and address it positively with out blaming themselves or anyone else.

So with natural skin care and positive action to deal with one’s emotional make-up, banishment is nigh.

Bacne, or back acne, is much like other types of acne. It is characterized by blemishes on the skin ranging from mild cases with pimples and blackheads, to the more severe cases, with pustules and even acne cysts. Back acne does not discriminate against any one age group, sex, race, or geographic location. It can literally strike anyone.

Many times when someone does get back acne, they are overwhelmed with the desire to cure it immediately. They feel like the discoloration or imperfections are all people will notice when people look at them. Below you will find the ten best ways to get rid of acne on your back.

1. If you want your back acne to clear up fast, a very important way to achieve this is to wear cool light colored clothes and to apply a little powder to your back. Doing so will reduce perspiration, the breeding ground for the bacteria that caused the acne. Also when you do perspire a lot, make sure to change your shirt so you do not get extra buildup.

2. When you do extended exercise or prolonged activities which require a lot of exertion where you perspire a lot, take a shower or bathe immediately. For the times when a shower or bath is not possible, at the least take a soft, clean, dry towel and wipe off your sweat.

3. The typical person will rub his skin dry after a shower or bath. If you suffer from back acne, it is important not to do this. Instead, take your towel and pat yourself dry. Rubbing of the skin can further the irritation and cause the skin to get more inflamed.

4. Use an anti-bacterial cleanser for acne. There are also soaps made to combat acne on your whole body, not just your face. Do not, however, use face soap on your back acne. This is too harsh and will not meet the special needs of your sensitive skin.

5. People who suffer from back acne should not use backpacks. Carrying a backpack can add heat to your already sensitive back. The added heat can increase perspiration and cause more breeding areas for your acne.

6. Using a benozyl peroxide mixture is still one of the best methods available to treat acne. However, make sure the gel or cream you choose has at least 10% benzoyl peroxide.

7. It is true that benzyl peroxide does work well, but there have been studies conducted wherein it was found that your acne will clear up to two times faster if you combine benzyl peroxide and a product containing alpha-hydroxyl.

8. There are also natural remedies available to deal with acne. Making and using a soap with sodium hydroxide (lye) and tea tree oil will not dry the acne but it will give you noticeably softer skin.

9. Exfoliating once a week is a good way as long as you pay close attention to do it on all parts of your body affected by the acne including, but not limited to your back and buttocks. This can be an expensive way to cure it but a less expensive option is to use sugar instead of the scrubs and cleansers that are available. Sugar will also remove the dead skin cells.

10. If your acne is severe, you can seek help from a skin doctor (dermatologist) Dermatologists help people with a variety of skin problems. A dermatologist may prescribe medications for your back acne problem. There are oral antibiotics, topical treatments, retinol and even oral contraceptives.

It is advised that you treat your back acne at the first signs of it. This can help to stop further spread of the bacteria and can also minimize the damage to your skin. The sooner you treat it, the sooner it will be gone.

Asthmas seldom causes allergic reactions in people, but allergies can be a trigger to asthma and allergies caused by air-borne particles sometimes cause a double reaction in certain sufferers. The air in the home and outside is filled with floating particles, many of which are breathed in through the nose and mouth. Some may cause a temporary reaction while others will cause a reaction every time the person is exposed. These allergic reactions can often trigger an asthma attack for an asthmatic person.

There are steps that can be taken to avoid the reactions of certain things on those who suffer from asthma and allergies, among them are simply to stay away from known triggers. However, this is not always possible and learning how to protect the immediate environment from being triggers friendly. While there are medical needs associated with those with asthma and allergies, the need for help can be reduced by taking a few precautions.

Some of the known triggers of asthma and allergies are smoke, cigarette and wood as well as perfumes, paint and hairspray. Others may include allergens such as pollen, dust and pet hair and pet dander. There are many others and new ones are being found every day. Avoiding exposure to these allergens is the best method, but that may entail living in a bubble, which is not feasible.

Control Triggers By Controlling Environment

Triggers for asthma and allergies that are found outside may not always be in the control of the sufferer. However, controlling the environment in which they live is within their power and making sure their home is resistant to hosting their known asthma and allergies triggers, will help them avoid sudden attacks.

Reducing or removing as many triggers of asthma and allergies is the first step in cleaning the home and, if possible, air conditioners and filtering systems can help remove dust from the air. Room temperature of 68 to 72-degrees is recommended and humidity levels of between 40 to 50 percent are ideal. Clothing should never be left on the bedroom floor as dust mites will accumulate quickly and when they are finally moved, the mites will be spread throughout the room.

Vacuum cleaner filters are one of the most important weapons in the fight against dust mites and micro filters that capture particles as small .3 microns are recommended. If a new vacuum is out of the question, filters can be purchased at a hardware store and cut to fit inside the vacuum cleaner to help contain the particles.

Do you think that you are allergic to your pet dog or cat? If so then you may be looking for some help, And I have found that it is hard when you find that you are allergic to your pet.

Before you assume that it is a pet allergy that you have you should know that sometimes, the symptoms of having a pet allergy can be caused by other allergies or by another medical illness, such as the flu or the common cold, Those who suffer from pet allergies may experience a runny nose, sneezing, nasal congestion, postnasal drip, develop a skin rash, or have difficultly breathing. If you experience severe allergy symptoms or if you would like conformation that you do have a pet allergy, schedule a visit with a doctor.

As for how you can go about treating your pet allergies that are due to your pet, you can remove the pet from your home. If you are unable to do so or if you choose not to, you will want to see if you can find it a good home. Friends or family members who are willing to take your pet are often considered the best option. Even if you want to keep your pet with you, there are still a number of steps that you can take to seek relief from some common pet allergies.

The best way to limit your allergy symptoms that can be attributed to your pet is to keep your pet out of your bedroom. The bedroom is the room where we spend most of our time. For that reason, your pet should be kept out of your bedroom. Doing so, may limit the number of irritating symptoms you display. It may also help to get you a good night of sleep. In addition to the bedroom, it is also important to examine other rooms that you may spend a good portion of your time, Consider keeping your pet out of that room as well.

Not letting your pet climb on your furniture is another great tip, This is particularly important if you like to lie down on your couch or rest in a reclining chair. You do not want to have pet dander and hair in your face. If you must, covers can be used, There are a number of cloth style covers that can be used, They are a great alternative to the unattractive plastic covers, With that in mind, should you use cloth covers, be sure to wash them every few days or when too much pet hair accumulates.

Investing in an air purifier is another way that you can seek relief from a pet allergy, without having to find a new home for your beloved pet, Air purifiers work by eliminating air particles, including pet dander, It is best if you search online for air purifiers that are designed to help those with allergies, These air purifiers can easily be found with a standard internet search, HEPA air filters and HEPA air purifiers are known for their amazing results.

Vacuuming as much as possible is another way to manage the symptoms that you may be experiencing due to having a pet allergy, In addition to vacuuming often, be sure to take a good, close look at the vacuum cleaner you are using. There are now vacuum cleaners that use HEPA filters and they come highly rated and recommended, In fact, there are even some vacuum cleaners that are targeted towards and marketed towards pet owners, You should examine these vacuum cleaners.

Following the steps mentioned above will help you get some relief from your pet allergies, you can also contact your doctor for some medications that will help you as well.

Post tubal ligation syndrome (PTLS) is a term used to describe a variety of symptoms that may occur after a tubal ligation. Symptoms that women frequently report include increased menstrual bleeding and cramps, hot flushes, night sweats, irritability, and mood swings. These are thought to be due to changes in hormone levels. One theory about what may cause these symptoms after a tubal ligation has to do with interruption of blood circulation between the ovaries and uterus that affects the production of ovarian hormones.

Doctors differ in their opinions about whether post tubal symptoms constitutes a true syndrome. It has been a subject of controversy n the medical literature for decades. Studies have reported conflicting conclusions about whether these symptoms are more common among women who have had a tubal sterilization than among women who have not had a sterilization procedure.

Women who describe their symptoms are convinced that PTLS is real and they argue that doctors should recognize this as a true medical syndrome. Many of these women have been told by doctors that the symptoms they have developed after their tubal ligation could not be related to the surgery and often report that they feel they aren’t taken seriously. Some doctors recommend treatment with birth control pills, antidepressants, anti-anxiety medications, referral to a psychologist, or even hysterectomy.

During the past several years, increasing numbers of patients have requested tubal lreversal surgery in hopes of finding relief from PTLS symptoms. A recent study of 91 women reporting PTLS used a standardized questionnaire prior to tubal reversal and at 6 month intervals following tubal ligation reversal to gather statistical data regarding the possible effects of tubal reversal on PTLS symptoms. The study found that 90% of reported improvement in their PTLS symptoms, 8% reported no change, and 2% reported an increase in symptoms after tubal ligation reveresal.

Members of the Tubal Reversal Message Board often discuss PTLS and how tubal reversal surgery has helped alleviate symptoms. These women uniformly disagree with the concept that symptoms that they have experienced since their tubal ligation are “just in their heads”. They are certain that their symptoms are not imaginary and are grateful when their symptoms disappear after tubal reversal surgery. The Message Board members offer encouragement and support to women who have similar symptoms and feelings and it helps them to realize that they are not alone. Following are some examples of posts on the subject of PTLS on the message board.

“I want to say thank you… my PTLS is practically gone and gets better ever month. I did not realize how bad I was truly feeling until I felt better and I thank you. I thank you for ‘putting me back together’ and for giving me the opportunity to have another child.”

“My name is Rhonda I had the reversal done because of the Post Tubal Syndrome caused by my tubal ligation. Although I realize that some people think that this Syndrome doesn’t exist, I can tell you that is does. I am so grateful that I found you and your staff. The results I have had since the reversal surgery have been tremendous.”

Conclusion: Counseling before having a tubal ligation rarely includes the possibility of menstrual and other symptoms encompassed by the term “post tubal ligation syndrome”. When women develop problems following female sterilization, they are frequently informed that their symptoms have nothing to do with the tubal ligation procedure. The purpose of this article is to promote awareness of PTLS and the possibility that tubal reparative surgery may remedy the problems.
